Kaitlin is too young for me to see if she has hip problems or not. I will

say that she can do some pretty funky things with her knees. I really believe

it is because of the DBB. She can bend her knees in ways that I could not even

imagine... almost completely sideways. It might be that her ligaments and

tendons have not tightened up yet because she is so young...I don't know. It

used to freak me out though. I can hold her and I will try to straighten her

knees but she bends them back and sometimes she will move her knees side to side

and they make a popping feeling. She does this intentionally and I don't

believe it is painful. She is able to bear weight fine and I don't know if it

is

because she is so young or what. I hope it doesn't cause her any problems.

Then again she also twists her arms into funky positions too now that I think

about it...Maybe its jsut a baby thing. Just thought I would mention it since

we were discussing the subject.

First of all, it isn't a tool to correct the feet. That's a big sign the

doc isn't on board fully. If I were you, I'd email Dr. Ponseti and ask for

clarification and take that to the doc. And if this guy is correcting feet

with the bar that's bad. The casts correct, not the bar.

And no one here has ever had a child with hip problems that I know

of. There are many many children here who wear it and have worn it for

years. You'd think at least one of them would have a hip problem if this

were the case. If anything, I would think it might affect the knees a

little. I know Darbi's knees sometimes *grind* (for lack of a better word,

vibrate is a little more accurate) but I've noticed my own joints doing

this same thing in my lifetime so I can't say it's because of the bar or not.

So what is this doc going to do with your son now anyway? Does he want him

out of it soon or what? Why was he telling you this?

I read that and agree something is amiss here. Like was already said, the bar

DOES NOT correct feet. The bar HOLDS on to the correction the casting provided.

After all the years and thousands of babies Dr. P and have treated with the DBB,

if there was significant damage/danger to the hips from the bar it would have

been discovered and documented by now - and the bar would be discontinued.

Your doctor may be " Plugged in " , but to the wrong outlet.

My understanding of the DBB is that it needs to be the same length as the

distance (width) between the baby's shoulders.

From everything that I've read about the Ponseti method, as long as the DBB is

the correct length, there should be no problem.

Hello Jurga!

As others have stated, the DBB does not correct clubfoot but rather

maintains it after correction has been achieved using the

manipulation and castings.

As far as the DBB affecting the hips negatively, the only thing that

I can think of that may concern the hips is habitual " W " sitting

while wearing the DBB.

Our doctor does a routine ultrasound of the baby's

hips at 6 weeks just to make sure that they are okay

but that was during our casting treatments.

Jurga,

I have not heard or read a statement before regarding the DBB

affecting hips other than if your baby was to swing his FAB/DBB and

hit you in the hips. That is the only thing that we have experienced

about the FAB/DBB being bad for hips (the parents hips).

When I was at the first of Dr. Herzenberg's Baltimore Ponseti method

training clinics in 2001, Dr. Dietz of the U of Iowa took some time

to answer questions from the audience of about 80 doctors and others.

Someone asked a question about whether the FAB/DBB could possibly

affect the knees. Dr. Dietz said that he had been involved in the

1993 long term outcome study where they looked at patients who were

then 25 to 42 years of age. He said that they did not see problems

with adults knees who had been treated with the Ponseti method. No

one asked him about hips but I didn't see anything concerning that in

Dr. Ponseti's book when it discussed the 40 year long term outcome

study.

My guess is that the 1993 study is available on the internet and you

should be able to access and print the full study to look at the

issues they reviewed in adults 25 to 42 years of age. A short

abstract of the study can be seen for free on the internet. The full

study with all of the details apparently costs money for the journals

that have the copyrights to the printing of the study.

http://www.ejbjs.org/cgi/content/abstract/77/10/1477

By the way, protect YOUR hips, put padding on the FAB/DBB.
