Hi Daiga,

Thanks for researching this. One thing I'm not clear on is that when

's first bar got too small, we discovered we had a 'large' bar from

the beginning. Does that mean that there is really only one size -

large - and that's why they have to make sure it will fit the little

babies too? Just wondering.

Our customised 'in South Africa' bar is working very well. It's not

another pieced clamped on though as has described. As I

explained in an earlier email, the orthotist had an extra length of bar

welded onto each end. It looks just like the original bar - two pieces

that clamp together, only longer and sprayed silver now instead of red!

Response from Hall re: wider bars

I wrote to Hall to ask what to do about a wider bar once

the 'large' bar has been outgrown. Here is some of her response:

" For children who out grow the foot abduction orthosis'

red bar, we add another bar between the two halves and

clamp them together. This should suffice to get Owen

through until he is done growing. We have not

requested that Fillauer make a longer bar, because it

makes it more difficult for fitting small children at

the start of treatment. In fact, many babies'

shoulder widths are narrower than the 9 " , which forces

orthotists to bend the bar to make it narrower.

Let me know when you get to the point where you can no

longer keep the bar together and match Owen's shoulder

width. At that time, I can give you instructions how

to lengthen the bar. "

I have written back to her to get more info in anticipation of Owen's

next growth spurt!

Hi !

The red adjustable bars come two sizes, 7-11 " and 9-15 " . I got

the 'large' bar right off the bat and it wasn't too big.

Your custom bar sounds great!

Dear Daiga, et. al.,

We have available fixed length (non-adjustable) DB Bars with foot

plates in 16 inch length from Fillauer (RED).

We also have some 18 " & 20 " bars left over.

Back in the old days, it was not uncommon to have some older kids in

bars, and the DB manufacturers made them up to 20 or 22 inches.

Anyway, there does exist longer bars after the 9-15 " . It is not

necessary to fashion a custom bar as suggests.

Thanks for the info Jay! To be perfectly honest though, I think that

I would much rather customize the bar that we already have with the

additional piece so that it will last throughout the end of FAB wear

and be cost effective. I don't like the idea of getting a fixed

length bar that will have to continuously be replaced as Owen grows.
