Guest guest
Maureen, Did Naomi wear the DBB 23/7 in the beginning? With the Ponseti Method, once the child starts the shoes and bar (DBB/FAB), they start at 23 hours/7 days for 3 months, then they are reduced to 16-18 hours per day and then when they start standing the hours are reduced to 12 hours. This is the general guideline. Was this what you followed? If not, then maybe there is reason to be concerned. I am not a doctor though. Did you tell Dr. P your exact timeline thus far? Guest guest
hi susan, naomi wore the boots 23/7 for three months one week and then the dr told us to go to bedtime wear. i questioned her again at naomi's appt two months ago and she said that naomi only needed it overnight and when i asked her how long overnight, she said as long as she tolerated it. when i emailed the pics to dr. p he said that naomi's feet overall looked good but that she should be in her boots naptime and bedtime. so we've been doing it a bit during the day, but now that naomi is so used to the freedom during the day, she's quite cranky when we try to put the boots back on. naomi has another appt in december with our dr and i'll ask her if the foot looks like it's relapsing, and i'll try to get naomi used to wearing the boots for a longer period during the day (maybe just extend it in the morning for a few hours)... i'm just confused as to why the drs would say different things. could it be because naomi's feet aren't has severe as some?? maureen > Maureen, > Did Naomi wear the DBB 23/7 in the beginning? Guest guest
Maureen, The more time that you can get her to wear it, the better your odds of avoiding regression. Maybe you can put it on earlier in the evening and leave it on later in the morning to try to get closer to the 16-18 hour per day mark? When she's walking, then you can get closer to the 10-12 hours/day. No one knows why doctors don't follow the same protocol when it comes to bracing. According to Dr. Morcuende at the U of Iowa, when I talked to him about regression this past spring, the initial severity of the foot/feet is not an indicator of the chances that the foot will regress. They treat all feet the same for bracing because they have no " predictors " as to which child has greater odds of regressing by age 4-5. I hope you can get Naomi to wear the brace a little more! Good luck, & (3-16-00) left clubfoot
Guest guest
You know, I always figured there was some reason why Dr. P. has the longer protocol. Our doc kept telling me she could do nights and naps after her 23/7 yet I just did the Ponseti protocol (16-18, 14-16, 12-14 and now 12) because I could. I figured, like I said there must be a reason for it and it was easier to do it then than to have to do something else or whatever later on when she was older. I suggest trying to do the whole time at once, worked really well for us. I couldn't be bothered to put those shoes on more than once a day myself... I know I'm lazy but what a PITA and we don't do scheduled naps here anyway - would never happen.
