Guest guest
But how far along do you have to be before your cervix closes? When I went in to my first appointment, and I was 4-5 weeks along my OB said he could tell I was pregnant without a test because my cervix was closed so tight. Guest guest
First off, congrats!!! As far as first appointments, I'm sure all doctors are different, but my confirmatory appointment included a urine pregnancy test, a pelvic exam, a Pap smear (even though I had had one 2 months prior), and about 4-5 tubes of blood. In the state I live in they require HIV testing for new mothers. They also drew the panel for chlamydia and gonorrhea. I think also blood counts (white count, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit) standard chemistries, as well as Rubella immunity (German measles which is VERY dangerous for pregnant women). Other than that, my doctors didn't do much. They are not big on ultrasounds other than confirmatory dating if necessary. They gave me the choice to wait until it would be closer to time to tell sex and I elected to do that. (Unfortunately since my dates were 2 weeks off they weren't able to tell the sex and my fourth child is probably going to be a surprise!! - NOT GOOD FOR ME!!) The doctor, when they do your pelvic exam, can basically confirm that you're pregnant because your uterus will already be enlarged. I had the problem that I wasn't able to give them a urine sample, and the nurses were giving me fits about staying in the office until I could. The doc said not to worry and to let me go.....he was 100% positive I was pregnant because I already had an enlarged uterus (thought it was 8 weeks though was only 6). He could have also done a confirmatory blood test, but didn't. For your peace of mind, since they're probably already going to draw so much blood, I'm sure you could have them slip a beta HCG in with the rest of the testing to assure you that you indeed are preggers. Congrats again, Mandi in Concord, NC Postop Distal RNY 09/23/02 (316/186 lowest but 194 at 17 weeks/165)
Guest guest
Worrying is natural. At my first OB visits the Dr. did an internal exam, blood test and an ultrasound with an approximate due date. He also discussed any issues I might have and gives out the script and (sometimes samples) of prenatal vitamins. I never believed I was pregnant either. Even after 3 or 4 urine tests. Once I started getting the signs of pregnancy it really kicked in, both times I started to get symptoms between 5 and 6 weeks. Relax, what you are feeling is normal. By the way Congrats!!! What all do they do at 1st dr.s appoint. if i just found i was pregnant thursday, i have another dr. appointment on wed., what all do they do at the 1st appointment? can they do ultra sound to see how far along i am and can they do a blood pregnancy test if i wanted them to, to make sure that i am preg? I just dont feel pregnant and even though ive taken 2 tests i want to just make sure so my hopes wont be so high. I have also heard of something called tubal pregnancy, i am scared that i might have that, dont know why, i just do. Guest guest
A TUBAL PREGNANCY IS VERY PAINFUL FROM WHAT I HEAR. YOU WOULD HAVE SEVERE PAIN IN ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER. AS FAR AS A BLOOD TEST. IF YOU HAD 2 POSITIVE AT HOME TESTS I THINK THEY WILL BELIEVE YOU, LOL.. YOUR URINE PICKED UP HCG WHICH IS DETECTED FROM PREGNANCY, SO YOU ARE PREGNANT FOR SURE, LOL... THE DOC MAY DO AN INTERNAL AND A PAP SMEAR AT YOUR FIRST APPT. THEY DO NOT ALWAYS DO A ULTRASOUND THE FIRST TIME BUT SOME DO, SO CROSS YOUR FINGERS AND HOPE THEY DO. YOU WILL PROBABLY NOT FEEL TOO PREGNANT YET BUT IN A WEEK OR 2 WILL START TO SEE CHANGES, INCREASED APPETITE, SORE BREASTS, MANY NAUSEA OR DIZZYNESS WHEN BEDING OVER. I HARDLY FELT PREGNANT AT ALL THIS PREGNANCY AND JUST RECENTLY STARTED TOO. GOOD LUCK TO YOU, God Bless, Robin, NorthEastern, NY EDD- July 27th, 2004 IT'S A BOY!!!!!! Guest guest
Hi, I am trying to get sufficient information about women who have had the weight loss and did any of them use IUD's. So far NO RESPONSE. Is this not an IMPORTANT SUBJECT AFTER SURGERY. I had a few responses but has ANYONE USED MIRENA (a new one ) or the COPPER ONE. Any good suggestions on anything would be appreciated. Thanks Re: What all do they do at 1st dr.s appoint. A TUBAL PREGNANCY IS VERY PAINFUL FROM WHAT I HEAR. Guest guest
I had my first appt and they took some blood work and they said they are waiting for my pregnancy hormone count to be over 6000, then they could see something on the ultrasound. My positive line was very faint so they performed another one in the office and it was faint as well, but they thought it was because I was only 3-4 weeks pregnant. I don't feel pregnant either, and that is bothering me. I am hoping it is just the shock of it all because we were done and hubby was already scheduled to get neutered when we found out. Guest guest
Part of it is because you may not be that far along and the uterus hasn't changed much so a test (urine or blood) is necessary. And a pap smear only scrapes a level of cells -- it doesn't actually allow the doctor to look at what is in the uterus like an ultrasound does. Rasley mailto: drasley@... Guest guest
You know whith my first pregnancy, I took a test and it was negative. I was having some slight cramping, so I saw the OB. He didn't do a urine test as I told him I tested negative. He did a pap and sent me for a vaginal ultrasound that showed I was 8 weeks pregnant. You would think he would have noticed something, but didn't. So, it could definetly happen. Re: What all do they do at 1st dr.s appoint. Guest guest
AT my first appointment, I was just tested. Second appointment wasn't made until approximately 12 weeks, for this pregnancy, and for my first. That's when the miscarriage rate falls, so I think they want to wait until they know that the pregnancy is most likely not going to be lost (sounds cold, doesn't it?). You take some blood tests in between the two appointments, and they let you know the results of those tests. At your 12 week appointment, they do a complete physical, including pap smear, and listen for the baby's heartbeat. Since they couldn't hear it with the first one, because I was so overweight, they did an ultrasound so they could see the heartbeat. He looked like a little teddy bear. I had a history appointment at 9 weeks this time, and she couldn't find the heartbeat yet, but she said that is normal, as it usually doesn't come out in doppler until 12 weeks or later. As far as feeling pregnant goes...I wouldn't worry too much. Having a little cramping is normal, and if you had a tubal pregnancy (ectopic pregnancy) it would be extremely painful cramps, from what I understand, they are alarmingly painful. I don't feel pregnant right now either, except that I am just starting to show, and my breasts have grown quite a bit, from an A to a C cup. I didn't feel pregnant the first time either. Don't worry, there will be plenty of time to feel pregnant, and then you can't wait to have the baby. Enjoy this journey. I am wishing I felt more pregnant than I do, and then I look at my coworker, due in 2 weeks, and she walks so uncomfortably, that she drags her feet. I bet SHE feels pregnant!!! in MA 323/155/165 at 11.5 weeks April 10, 2002 Open RNY Mommy to Caleb, 11/27/00, wife to Ray since 9/28/96. Caleb's little brother or sister is due 9/23/04.
