Guest guest
Jennipher, We had problems keeping the heel down when we first started putting the 's on Claire. We have found that best way to put them on is with the her sitting in the corner of a chair. Make sure that her legs are completely bent underneath her, almost to the point that she is sitting on top of her own feet. Don't let her kick her legs straight because the heels will slide. Dr. Ponseti also told us that the heel will gradually drop into the shoe. It could take weeks. told us that there is some extra space designed into the shoe, which makes the heel area a little deeper than the rest of the shoe. This is for babies with bigger fatter feet. He said that if you look through the little windows in the back, the heel shouldn't be above them. If there is a little gap under the heel that should be fine. That is where Claire's are now, just a tiny gap. I am still questioning that though. It just makes me nervous that they are not completely down all the way. I guess I'm just over concerned because she has been through so much, I don't want to lose any correction! Guest guest
Hi , Lhea is 5 months old, but I guess my husband can help hold her up while I put the shoes on? LOL! I don't want to lose any correction either, perhaps it's paranoia, but she's been through a TAL twice - once at home and once with Dr. P. as of right now, I can see her heel above the holes and if I put my pinky finger in, there is room. Dr. P. told me that also by tightening the middle strap is what helps keep the heel down. I'm wondering if when she's sleeping (although it would be disruptive to her) if I should try to get this accomplished. Although she's got the flexion, it just seems hard (I am sure I'll get used to it) to slip these babies on. I'm so proud of my little girl. I remember with her DBB's, she cried, cried, cried. Of course, her feet at that time were not corrected - our doctor felt that they were, because with hand manipulation, they straightened out - HA! (sarcastic tone!). I will try the chair, but any more advice is most certainly welcome. laura_koester2004 koesterbl@...> wrote: Jennipher, We had problems keeping the heel down when we first started putting the 's on Claire. Guest guest
Jennipher, it does take some getting used to at the beginning but before you know it, you'll be able to put them on her with your eyes closed! When putting them on, it helps to loosen the laces as much as you can and pull the sides of the shoe wide open and pull the tongue up and out of the way (without letting the strap pull out of the slots!). I ended up knotting the very ends of the laces so that they wouldn't pull out of the eyelets - it makes loosening the laces and pulling the shoe open much easier! With the shoe opened up wide, you're able to 'see' that her foot is flat in the shoe and that her heel is all the way to the back of the shoe. Then, carefully pull the strap tight and adjust the tongue (so that it's centered on her foot) as you do so before fastening the buckle. Once that is done, the lacing up is relatively easy. I found that having Owen on my lap facing away from me is easiest for us. If he's particularly curious and wanting to touch, I can easily pin his arms to his sides while wrapping my arms around him to fasten his shoes. Hope this helps, Daiga and Owen, 02/04/03 Unilateral LCF, FAB 14/24 > hi everyone! > > please excuse my lower case letters....i am holding lhea.... > > she got her shoes on from dr. p yesterday. she did great...only cried when she was getting them on....but my question is how can i get her heel to touch her shoe & is there an easy way of getting them on??? > > thank you!!! > jennipher > lhea's mommy; bcf 5/28/04 > > >
Guest guest
Hi Daiga, She's in shoes - no laces on those. Although I do know what you mean, she had the DBB's for a while. Those were actually a bit easier on the putting on department. The shoes are almost like aqua socks with straps. Three straps. The middle one is the one that was suggested to go on first since it holds down the heel.... Thanks for your help! I greatly appreciate your words! Guest guest
Jennipher, The last paragraph that you wrote is our story exactly. Claire is 9 months old now. We started seeing Dr. Ponseti when she was 6 months old. She was also in the dbb for about 2 months. I feel so bad looking back at it. We were trying to cram her little uncorrected feet into the shoes. Our doctor told us that the shoes would finish the correction. Her feet were still so curved that she couldn't keep the shoes on for more than 2 minutes with the bar connected. He then told us that wearing the shoes alone without the bar would do just as well. I'm so glad I found Dr. Ponseti when I did. I feel very fortunate. > > hi everyone! > > > > please excuse my lower case letters....i am holding lhea.... > > > > she got her shoes on from dr. p yesterday. she did great...only > cried when she was getting them on....but my question is how can i > get her heel to touch her shoe & is there an easy way of getting them > on??? > > > > thank you!!! > > jennipher > > lhea's mommy; bcf 5/28/04 > > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi , Tell me about it, I just don't understand how doctors can claim.....when they really have no clue. I do know that Dr. Ponseti wrote our first doctor and he just responded (Dr. P. wrote him about 4 weeks ago.) That doctor claimed that Lhea was his 3rd or 4th patient with that severity. Yet, he told us that her feet were not that severe. He also told us to not only keep the shoes on but manipulate her feet and massage them - they would be normal. I have much to thank to this board for their encouragement to see Dr. Ponseti! laura_koester2004 koesterbl@...> wrote: Jennipher, The last paragraph that you wrote is our story exactly. Guest guest
Hi there.. To put 's shoes on I like to sit him on a chair or sofa that keeps him sitting up straight. I like to slide his foot in from the toe of the shoe to the back that way the sides of the shoe (yellow rubbery part) doesn't bend around his foot. Then I pull the tongue over tightly with one hand and hold with thumb then with the other I fasten the middle strap. Without letting go of the tongue i fasten the top strap. Once that is done i will tighten the middle strap and then the top one again. Then all that's next is the toe strap. Dr. P. did tell us that the foot may not go all the way down or back but that we should tighten the straps more every so often until it does.. But I think that is because had such deep creases. Anyways.. I don't know if this will help you. Thought I'd chime in just incase.. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi , thanks for the 'chime' it's going to help. Today was pretty nifty. I took her to my mom's place today for Halloween to show Lhea with her costume on to my family. They wanted to see her feet, so I took a few minutes of my hour and showed her feet. What I did was lay her down, put the shoe on the way you describe it. Seems to be working.. Thank you for writing! I greatly appreciate it. Sterling-Peek poohismybb@...> wrote: Hi there.. Guest guest
I had my first at 33 (I think? haha) and we co-slept for years but he wasn't in the DBB, just lots and lots and lots of casts (non ponseti nightmare). My 2nd boy is 13 months old now and we tried the co-sleep with him but it didn't work out. The DBB is hard to sleep with on a small bed, none of us were comfortable so I moved baby in to his own bed and that started helping a lot. I know, it's sad, broke my heart cuz I love to cuddle with them at night and know they are safe right beside me, but it's been better for him actually. Just keep his little bed right there beside you. We started this several months ago and he still woke up a lot at night - but interestingly - we bought a house this summer with only ONE bedroom! UGH! So we were all stacked up in there till we could begin the room addition. Recently I moved our bed to the living room to make space for construction, leaving the two boys in the bedroom and baby has started sleeping through the night. I am wondering if in this particular case sleeping away from him is actually the golden key here - maybe waking up and seeing me with in reach prompted him to wake up more? s. Guest guest
With my first son it was better for him to be in his own bed and now with he is right next to me. slept through the night at 6 weeks old. started at 3 months, right when he got the bar. Funny huh. I have not had any major issues. I guess I am one of the lucky ones....... I am wondering if in this particular case sleeping away from him is actually the golden key here - maybe waking up and seeing me with in reach prompted him to wake up more? s. Guest guest
Hey.. I am glad you guys addressed this issue. Ava has been in the 's for almost 3wks. Few days shy. I was wondering about this myself. I have notice the L foot does stay down better than her R. I pull the R so tight that I am now going to have to go to the local shoemaker to see if he can restitch the part where the middle buckle is. The stitching is starting to come loose. We do go back to Dr. Ponseti the beginning of Dec. She will be having another tenotomy. I am just trying to maintain the correction he achived when we were there is Sept. I find that she is relapsing a little bit only on the R and don't want to loose any more correction. Our previous doctors said the say thing you posted. The feet would finish correcting itself with the Markells and when she began weight bearing. She was only 3 months old. The info they gave didn't sound good to me so contacted Dr. P. Again, thanks for addressing this! Guest guest
Just a question to add to the 's. When we first put Ava in the shoes I was able to use the (example) 4th hole then gradually the 5th hole. It's been almost 3wks and now I can't get the 5th hole anymore. Do you think it might be due to growth?? I was hoping I could still use the 5th only due to the suede stretching. Make sense?? Guest guest
The suede stretches but also the child grows, so don't insist on a certain hole, just insist on the right fit. s. Guest guest
Hi KK, yes, I saw that too, on a previous email - the one where you were happy it was addressed and we go to Dr. P. in December as well. When is your appointment? Ours is the 2nd or 3rd. Wow, one day older! Feels funny to say that. fabegirls fabegirls@...> wrote: jennipher, Just took notice of Lhea's DOB 5/28/04. Ava is 5/27/04.
