Leah didn't have problems while in the casts; course she always lifted her

legs as if she wasn't wearing casts :). It was pretty funny watching her

whirl her legs around while being fed, and hoping she wouldn't hit us or

herself with the casts. Her constipation problems started once she started

with the DBB. Her doc finally had us start putting Karo syrup (the medium

kind) in her bottles, and that helped regulate her bowels somewhat. She was

a breastmilk baby, but we had to use bottles since she never would latch

on. She finally started regulating herself after she started more solid

foods, and switching over to formula at 7 months helped too ( dried

up in the summer heat).

When Zoe's stool seems very firm I add some stage 2 baby food prunes

to her diet. She doesn;t love them the straight, but if I mix them

with bananas or something else she has no problem with it. It works

that day. I know this is not useful for younger babies, but may work

on those who are on to the solids.

Part of it could be her lack of mobility, but then again, it's not entirely odd

for a baby to go several days between BM's, especially if you breast feed. You

can try to help her along by laying her on her back and moving her legs up to

her head and back down, sort of mini reverse sit-ups, also message around on her

belly, stroke it up and down, around and around and knead it with a firm yet

gentle hand to help the food work through her system. Not to mention it's

good mommy-baby time and feels nice to the baby....You'll notice in nature

mother animals do this to their young by licking them so hard all the time,

stimulating their digestive system until the baby pup, etc., can move enough on

it's own to stimulate itself.
