Guest guest
I am 1 1/2 years post op and I can eat alot also and it really scares me. I am 20 weeks pregnant (monday) nad my appetite has lessened more than it did in the first trimester but i still think I can eat too much. I really feel I can eat more than the size of an egg. I have even been wondering if my surgery did not go right and he did not make my pouch small enough. I sure hope after the baby I can lose the remaining weight and stay small and healthy. Guest guest
I know most everybody here seems to be within a year of their gastric surgery. I had mine 1/99. I had an open roux-en-y gastric bypass. I've been worried for the past 2 years or so, because I can eat a whole lot more than I could when I was post surgical. Some of which, is the type of food I eat (softer, more water content, goes through my pouch quicker) but mostly I was concerned that I could eat, get full, rest, then eat again within an hour and repeat the cycle. Next I've been worried about gaining my weight back... haven't seen my surgeon in a while, scared that I'm a " statistic " of another RNY gaining weight back (he promotes the BPD) and then I realize that everybody drops, then levels, then slowly gains and loses that horrible gaunt look in their face (Al Roker.) Well.... the point I'm trying to make... when you're out a few years, worried about all this, get pregnant, and your pouch will go back to only holding 1/2 an egg again!! My total weight gain at 24 weeks was 21 pounds. I have decided to let myself gain the max " normal " amount of 35 pounds (they say normal women will gain 25-35 pounds.) I lost a pound at 27 1/2 weeks, and since Tuesday have lost another pound. I know my baby is getting enough, because I keep on eating what I can (good food, yogurt for calcium, protein, and some fiber for me) and I stay away from empty calories... but I'm reminded that my stomach is truly the size of an egg. Happy Weekend!!
Guest guest
Robin, I got preg. very early post-op (7 weeks.) Although I suffer from bad morning sickness the entire 9 months, when I did want to eat..it was alot more than I expected to be able to eat. It scared me that when the baby was born and the morning sickness was gone that I would be able to eat anyhting and any amount. After was born I my amount that I could eat lessened. It really did. I think it had to do with me being prego and the amount I could eat. Don't get me wrong it wasn't a big amount I could eat by any means, I really could tolerate bigger amounts while prego. Guest guest
I had surgery almost 2 years ago now. I know the fears you are feeling are quite real. This was my 2nd bariatric surgery. In 1992, I had gastric stapling. Now, I was 10 years younger, education about surgery was not part of the whole lifestyle change and finding anyone else who was in my shoes was not a simple thing like it is today. I had lost about 70-80 pounds, but within 2.5 years of the surgery I had gained a large portion of it back. By the time I had my RNY in 2002 I had gained another 70 pounds. I had a upper GI series that indicated the staple line had ruptured, which allowed me to eat like I had pre op and I had reverted back to my old habits, high fat, high sugar...basically junk. So, the surgery had failed and I wasn't helping things. At least I knew it wasn't all my fault. So, I had a revision to my stapling and am very happy to say that I lost 190 pounds since April 2002! If it wasn't for the RNY, I would never be pregnant. Being so obese really had my system out of whack. Losing all the weight finally put my body back in correct working order. I have read in many posts, that a lot of us prego postopers for one reason or another can eat more ONLY during our pregnancy and after the baby is born you basically go back to getting full like you had pre pregnancy. Now, I am not sure how true this is, and frankly, I don't want to try it out. I mean, I feel as though my appetite is huger than ever, and it always wants cookies!! YIKES!! I made my husband take his stuff and hide it, because usually I have fairly strong will power than keeps me from grabbing one, but lately, they have a hold on me that I have to stop. I still get full like I always have been for the past 1.5 years, that first 6 months you really can't eat much until your belly heals...you remember. Like I said, my appetite is just so much bigger. At 25 weeks, I have gained about 15 pounds....I think. It's kind of scary as I am sure you might agree. But, it's all belly. Most times, I am worried I am eating too much. I feel like I eat all day long...that frightens me. But then I look at what I am eating...fruit, or 2 crackers with some PB or a little cheese, light microwave popcorn. Everything you read eveywhere tells you not to diet while you are pregnant. Hey, I still count my calories. Yes, I am eating more for my baby, but I don't need to eat twice as much. I think as long as you are eating a healthy well balanced diet, don't worry ahout where you will be once the baby comes. If you have still followed the same kind of eating habits that you did pre pregnancy, why wouldn't you be able to lose your weight??? Finally, if you truly feel like you can eat like you did pre op, I think you should get in touch with your surgeon. I know some things I can eat more of, like popcorn, but others like chicken breast, I can eat much less. Best of Luck to you!!
