Guest guest
had his one-year checkup last week and the pediatrician asked if he had the surgery. He was supposed to have major surgery on his feet to straighten his bones until I found out about Dr. Ponseti just in the nick of time. :)Anyway, I told her we found Dr. Mack at Shriner's Hospital who uses the Ponseti method and didn't need surgery. She was amazed to learn that it only took 6 casts to correct his feet and only the tenotomy as opposed to major foot surgery. She said she would do some research on Dr. Ponseti and definitely let other patients know about Dr. Mack. I'm happy to know she has the information so other parents can learn they have a choice over surgery. and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet
Guest guest
, That's great news. You might want to print off the Global HELP booklet for her, or give her the web address for the Global HELP booklet and Dr. P's virtual hospital site too. You never know when your initiative will end up helping another family! Our former pediatrician was a complete Ponseti advocate after we educated him about it (he'd examined from day one and was impressed with how her foot turned out in the end). Guest guest
, It's great that your pediatrician is so willing to be educated. The pediatrician is often the first person to diagnose the clubfoot, so the better educated they can be, the better for the patient. Our pediatrician, doing what he thought best for Jonah--and trying to spare us looking at his feet--casted him as soon as he could, about 6 hours after he was born. However, now that we've educated him, I don't think he'll ever cast a clubfoot again. He really appreciated the copy of the Global HELP booklet we gave him. You can download it at: http://www.global-help.org/publications/cf-english.pdf We also referred him to a recent paper in the journal Pediatrics. An abstract is at: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/2/376 Dr Humphrey(our ped) has been really amazed at how well Jonah's feet have turned out. He has shared our experience with other local pediatricians as well. All our best to you and . When do those casts come off?
