Heel cord surgery information

Hello. Well, Kelsey got her 2nd cast yesterday and we had to go back

to day to get it fixed because with her walking/cruising on it, she

pretty much destroyed the foot portion in the last 24 hours so they

had to reinforce it. Luckily, it was still holding her foot well

enough to not have to completely redo the cast.

Kelsey will be having the heel cord release procedure done in a few

week and I just wondered what everyone's experience has been with

this. Was it very painful and what was the recovery time like? I can

imaging that cutting the Achilles tendon would not necessarily be a

terribly easy thing. I would just like to know what your experience

as parents has been with this procedure.

Thanks.

Jenni- mom to Kelsey (11/7/03) with lt clubfoot and (10/31/01).

--Jenni – We had ours done at IC, so it was under local anthestia and

I was able to stay in the room with her. She cried when they were

numbing her feet and doing the surgery but not a terrible cry. Just

her normal upset cry. As soon as they were done and putting the

casts on she was fine. It only took about 10 minutes and most of

that time was spent numbing her legs. We gave her Tylenol for the

rest of the day and by the next morning she was fine. HTH. It

really is worse on the mom then the baby I think.

I was extremely nervous the morning of my son's heel cord procedure. However,

all went really well. The procedure itself probably took less than 10 minutes. I

gave my son infant Tyenol for the rest of that day and he was absolutely fine.

Just so you're prepared: I was at the Drs. office for a long time that day. My

son's cast had to be removed. Then the Dr. wanted the foot x-ray'd (standard

procedure in his office prior to heel-cord procedure), we then had to wait for

the x-rays to be developed, then for my son to receive his local anesthetic, for

the procedure itself, and then finally for the next cast to be put on. None of

these things were a big deal, but do be prepared that it may be a long visit.

Good luck; I hope this info. is helpful.
