Guest guest
Hi. I don't know about the swollen toes, that never happened to us. I am pretty sure that the skin around the ankles is the extra (stretched) skin from the foot being turned in. Since the foot is corrected the extra skin bunches up in that area. Kaitlin's grooves were pretty deep at one time and also resembled cuts or slices in the skin. She still has the folds but is only 7 months old. It is my understanding that this is normal and usually resolves with growing. HTH Freeman
Guest guest
has a lot of folds in his skin on the feet and ankles. The only casts that developed sores were the tenonomy cats that stayed on for 4 weeks. hwcutie hwcutie@...> wrote: My son has a left club foot and in each cast his toes have grown out of them and have stayed swollen. One thing that I was concerned about is when they take the casts off near his ankle it looks like he's been cut or sliced. When they took off his third cast it was worse than the previous one and the Doctor was not concerned with it because they say it's from the skin growing but not being able to stretch out. Has this happened on any other child? My son gets his 4th and final cast off on Thursday and I'm afraid of what his foot will look like when the cast is off since he's had it on for three weeks. We did get lucky and didn't have to have him get a tetnomy, but I want to know about the skin issue. If it has happened to someone else how long before it healed? Anyway any suggestions? Guest guest
thank you that's what they tried to explain to me, but the way you put it makes more sense.
Guest guest
I remember when 's first casts were removed. I nearly jumped at the girl that took his casts off. It scared me so bad!! I thought she had cut his little legs all up with that saw.. After I checked his feet out I realized it was only where is skin had bunched up. I felt so silly.. But when you see something like that I guess it's just instinct to protect (especially your babies). If all it is, is where the skin has bunched up it's perfectly normal. And they will grow out of most of it... -------------- Original message -------------- Hi. I don't know about the swollen toes, that never happened to us. Guest guest
I'm curious as to why your doctor put a 3 week cast on your son if he didn't have the tenotomy? Did they tell you why it would need to stay on that long? It was my understanding that the only time a 3 week cast is used in the Ponseti method is post-tenotomy in order to allow the tendon to heal. Were his other casts changed every 5-7 days? Regards, & (3-16-00) left clubfoot
Guest guest
My daughter Grace has bilateral CF (right) we see a Ponseti certified DR in Vancouver BC. Our little girl also did not need the tenotomy (quite rare according to our Dr. he told us that he almost always does a tenotomy, he said that Grace was the third or fourth child out of hundreds that he has treated that he did not preform the tenotomy on). She was put in the 3 week cast (she had 4 casts in total to get to full correction) to ensure proper correction before she went into the DBB brace. She had a growth spurt and had a couple of pretty bad wounds when we removed the (soft) cast. They did heal in a few days...we were told that we could put polysporyn on the wounds. Since her wounds were quite bad and she also had a lot of bruising on her leg, we, with the approval of Dr. Pirani gave her a week to heal before she went into the DBB's. We went back to Dr. Pirani to see if she needed to be re-casted after the week of healing and her foot was fine to go into the brace, it was still actually in an overcorrected position, past 70 degrees! At the time I must say that we were quite upset by the wounds on her little foot and the bruising on her leg but it did heal quite quickly, it took about 5 days. You may want to talk to your Dr. about giving your little some time to heal depending on the severity of the wounds. For us, we decided that she needed a week to heal even if it meant that she may need one more cast, luckily, she didn't. Good luck and I hope your little guy's foot isn't sore when you remove the cast! Guest guest
You know what I'm not quite sure, but I think it's because they manipulated it in the most extreme position and it needed to stay that way for a longer period. Yes his first three casts were only on a week or so. athan wasn't able to get the surgery done because the DR couldn't feel the heel cord on his club foot so they weren't going to touch it. My son was 5 weeks premature so he's got some small features although he is two months old and ten pounds. I think also since they couldn't feel the cord, the cast needed to be on longer to get the cord to be able to be felt. I will ask though either at the next appointment in December or if I decide to call and ask about the shoes since my son likes to work his left foot out(the one that's clubbed). Anyway good question thanks, I really should have gotten on before going in to get his cast off and his shoes put on. Guest guest
Well luckily his wounds on his foot were just fine with this cast so I was glad, but I'm happy you brought up the bruising because my son's leg was bruised pretty badly too. I wasn't sure if that was normal or what. The day after he got his cast off he got a shot to give him protection from RSV, he's at a higher risk of getting it because he was born 5 weeks premature, and the nurse that came to our house to give it to him had told me that he had a bruised leg because he was kicking so hard with the DBB on. The bruising is almost gone after only about four days. Thanks for your input.
