At my hospital (one of the 3 major birthing hospitals in the state),

just because babies are 34-35 weeks gestation that isn't any reason

for them to go to NICU. In fact, if they look great (7, 8 or 9

apgars) and weigh over 4.5# they go to well born nursery.

Are you in the U.S.?

Just wondering.... Here, prematurity doesn't mean a mandatory NICU

stay.

you can't get our NICU RN's to take anything with anything less than

a 6/8 apgar...lol

:)

We just changed protocol that we only even call NICU if the gestation

is less than 36 weeks. Any baby, no matter the gestation, will go to

Wellborn nursery unless they have low apgars or are low birthweight.
