It sounds like you were in some way allergic. Do you think it was just the brand you were using? Maybe a dye or additive in it that was causing the side effects? Guest guest Posted October 17, 2004 Report Share Posted October 17, 2004 Hi , The longest that Dr Cohen has allowed me to take Creatine was 2 weeks with the second week being a reduction in the dose so I can't judge what would have happened in 4 but it does sound as if you had an allergic reaction and should probably stay away from it. I did not experience any itching or neuropathy problems that I could associate with the Creatine. I'm sorry this happened to you. After being on it about 2 1/2 weeks, I started to itch all over my body and started having more problems with neuropathy. I took it for a total of 4 weeks before the itching and neuropathy got so bad I couldn't stand it. I stopped it and after a couple of days, the itching and neuropathy started to abate. The itching and neuropathy is totally gone after being off the creatine for about 1 month. Anyone else have any similar issues with it? Just wondering. We have been taking the same brand. I have had no problems and I'm beginning to see some increase in energy, but not in strength or endurance. He said that it has recently been determined that it could be taken long term as long as I drank lots of water which I have always done. It sounds like ideas are changing again. I'm surprised at how many people have had problems with it. I started it as part of my muscle-building strategy, and followed the protocol in the Muscle magazines. (I was WEAK , doctors could not seem to help, so I thought, why not do what the big boys do, to get some strength back?) That protocol is to use it for 2 months, and then to go off it for 1 month. When using it, 5 grams per day is what I take. Sometimes I " load " up, by taking more (up to 4 doses of 5 grams, if I remembered) for several days, in the beginning of the cycle. I can always definitely tell when I am not taking it. My strength is definitely lower, even when I am actively still lifting weights. At first, I did not believe it. I did not believe that it could have such an effect, but I have cycled off an on it now enough times to be sure. I do not have any side effects, I believe. I try to take it on an empty stomach, with just a little sugar, but if I forget, I will take it anytime I think of it. I am not totally religious about taking it. One more thing to remember...... For people who have had a reaction to it, - there are forms that are straight creatine monohydrate, with nothing else in it. Did you try that, or a form with other things in it? Did you drink plenty of water with it? I dilute mine in water, but it still stays gritty. I just keep stirring it as I drink it, but some is still left on the glass. Then I try to wait 30 minutes, before I have breakfast. On days I am working out, I take it right before I enter the gym, and some right after I leave the gym (yes, in the car). That is the latest recommendation (that I found - although there are a lot of different ideas on it) for a creatine protocol for maximum muscle gain. I believe Dr. Tarnapolsky suggests the 5 grams in divided doses, spread out through the day. For mito people that might be better. We seem to need it for normal function, not the weight-lifting part. And it might be easier to tolerate in divided doses. Even 4 times a day would not be too many (total maximum 5 grams only, per day). Another thought is to reduce the dosage. I have read (sports literature - this one cam from Dr. Colgan, - in his Sorts Nutrition Guide) that less might be needed by women who do not have such a huge muscle mass. Creatine only works in muscle, and the 5 grams was intended for the " big " muscle-bound guys who do serious weight lifting. So, if we have a lot less muscle, less of it might help us too. So, if 5 grams is hard to take, maybe a lot less to start out with might do - even 1 gram, or 2 grams total, for the entire day. I personally think 3 grams is probably enough for me, total in the day. The sports literature has talked about creatine for years. It is the only supplement that I am aware of that has started in sports and moved on into mainline medicine. There are some decent small studies on it now. More and more work is being done with it. Hopefully, in a few years we will see results of a lot of decent studies about it. I offer this all " in my experience " Of course anything we share is always dependent on..... " That gave me more go-aheads that the other way, asking " Will this help me? " For example, the cardiologist who follows me for hypertension has finally told me that he sees nothing harmful in the the mito coctail I am taking. This after many visits of arguing about mito disease. That is as far as he can open the door to his mind right now. And I respect that he is tops in his field. Sigh! I've had mixed results, depending on which brand I use. Any brand tends to upset my stomach, so I am now putting it in my nighttime j-tube formula bag and slowly dripping it in. Do you remember where you got yours? , I am glad you are experiencing a positive result. I must say, I don't expect too much from it, just a boost in my strength. Then it occured to me, the brain might also be benefited from it. Now I will have to see if I notice any improvement in concentration, memory, or brain fog when I am on it. I was kind of surprised to think that it might have worked, and didn't conclude definitely that it was doing anything for a while. But, every time i cycled off, I could tell my strength was less. So, it probably was over 2 months, (my first cycling off) and it could have been over 5 months(second cycling off) till I noticed it, but at first I wasn't looking for it! Does that make sense? I thought the strength gain was just due to the weight lifting I had been working so hard on. I am best able to tell if something is working by looking " back " in time, over a long time. Day to day I am never sure what is due to what. But, with the weight lifiting, I keep careful records, so I can see if I get weaker or stronger. From others at the gym who talk about it, I would guess a month or two should show it. Don't expect huge gains either. Just a little more power. That power could be multiplied if you could also do a little more. Then the muscles would grow for you also. I can tell how I am feeling now, by comparing what I can do to a past time marker. Last fall I pushed the leaf blower, this fall I can do it too, so I figure i am about the same. In the summer I garden more, and do less weight lifting (cant do too much in one day, so I must chose) and I can tell my general strength declines, even with all the gardening I do. I NEED that hard lifting to keep my strength, no way around it. Especially my forearms get so weak!. Back muscles too, makes it harder for me to keep decent posture. Now I will start the lifting more seriously again, and in 2-3 months I should have more strength back. Same pattern happened previous summer, when I didnt quite stick to my schedule. I didn't lose everthing, but definitely the muscles got a little weaker. This is independent from the creatine effect also. I am strongest when I have taken the creatine AND have done my lifting routine faithfully. It really is a drag, but I am happy with the results, and gratetful that I have the time to do it. I was kind of surprised to think that it might have worked, and didn't conclude definitely that it was doing anything for a while. But, every time i cycled off, I could tell my strength was less. So, it probably was over 2 months, (my first cycling off) and it could have been over 5 months(second cycling off) till I noticed it, but at first I wasn't looking for it! Does that make sense? I thought the strength gain was just due to the weight lifting I had been working so hard on. I am best able to tell if something is working by looking " back " in time, over a long time. Day to day I am never sure what is due to what. But, with the weight lifiting, I keep careful records, so I can see if I get weaker or stronger. From others at the gym who talk about it, I would guess a month or two should show it. Don't expect huge gains either. Just a little more power. That power could be multiplied if you could also do a little more. Then the muscles would grow for you also. I can tell how I am feeling now, by comparing what I can do to a past time marker. Last fall I pushed the leaf blower, this fall I can do it too, so I figure i am about the same. In the summer I garden more, and do less weight lifting (cant do too much in one day, so I must chose) and I can tell my general strength declines, even with all the gardening I do. I NEED that hard lifting to keep my strength, no way around it. Especially my forearms get so weak!. Back muscles too, makes it harder for me to keep decent posture. Now I will start the lifting more seriously again, and in 2-3 months I should have more strength back. Same pattern happened previous summer, when I didnt quite stick to my schedule. I didn't lose everthing, but definitely the muscles got a little weaker. This is independent from the creatine effect also. I am strongest when I have taken the creatine AND have done my lifting routine faithfully. It really is a drag, but I am happy with the results, and gratetful that I have the time to do it.
