" Imagine where our kids would be if every district could make this claim whenever they felt like it. You may wish to enlist the services of a special education lawyer or advocate to help you acquire FAPE for your son. You son should be allowed to be part of his own community and should be able to attend his home school if at all possible. I work in a rural clinic in Livingston, CA I see a large population of migrant farm workers. I enjoy working with this population very much and I would like to know how I could obtain further training and education to help this group of workers. If anyone know of any seminars or conferences that would really help. Trust me almost every parent out there with a child with autism has gone through similar experiences to yours. I see on the message board that you are getting some responses from some very knowledgable people, call them! As far as Dr. G goes, it is great to find a doctor to work with you locally, but make the appt. with Dr. G as a backup right away, there will be an 8 month wait before you can get in to see him. is a great organization and you are lucky to have found them, I am too! We currently live in Sacramento but may be moving to Southern California next year because of a job transfer. My son is 3 1/2 and in a typical preschool with an aide. He is very high functioning, verbal and sweet as could be. What school districts are supportive of inclusion and really helping these kids???? We are looking at Long Beach, Irvine, Los Alamitos, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach as some possible places to live! Does anyone have any pediatrician, therapist, SI clinic suggestions?? Are there any Orange County doctors that work with Dr. G's protocol.....we will obviously see Dr. G on a more regular basis but if we are in O.C. we will need a close doctor for emergencies, colds, the " basics " !! We have also always practiced " floortime " by Stanley Greenspan.....Does anyone know of a support group or school district that embraces that philosophy??? I live and work mostly in the LA area and the San Valley and Santa Clarita areas. You are probably familiar of the Regional Centers. Unfortunately OC RC is known to be tough (not voluntiring services...) There is a support group that is meeting once a month in Huntington beach that is really great! I know a lot of very supportive people in the area. They can also advice on doctors etc. If it is ok with you, I will forward your email to a few great moms from OC. I live in Woodland Hills (San Valley (10 minutes from Dr G.) The school district here is Los Angeles Unified. Please feel free to call me if you need any more info. I have full time (40 hours per week) ABA home program completely funded by the school district and Regional center. Let me know if I can help in any way. Of the cities you mentioned as possible places to live, I have heard bad things about four of the larger school districts (in particular Huntington Beach and Long Beach). The only one I have no knowledge of is Los Alamitos (which is a nice city). Our pediatrician is in Orange, and our SLP is in Anaheim Hills, so if you do end up closer to the coast, that may be too far for you. We have a couple of really great support groups here as well. My son has 3 hours in home speech therapy a week. 2 hours of O.T. at a SI clinic and one hour of P.T. in the clinic. He attends a typical preschool with an aide (to help with socialization). I do not have an ABA program (though I am looking into it) because we have always used Floortime! He is so high functioning and I have been told he doesn't need it (however I am going to have an ABA co. evaluate him to see what they will offer me) I just don't see how he could be in a 30-40 hour a week program in addition to everything else he does!! Fountain valley contracts out for their services, and I hear they are very inconsisent. You should call the SELPA, which is FV, HB Westmisnter and a few others. If you need mor einfo let me know.
