Guest guest
I am right with you on that one. We have had more than one person come up to us and say. Oh my so and so had this or that and only wore the bar for 6 months. And I am like well - we will be in this for a lot longer, thinking the whole time, why doesn't a big bird come out of the sky and eat this person right in front of me.. We had our oldest son in the ER on Friday and everytime someone came into the room they headed straight for , I guess because of the bar, and I would have to correct them and say - No, he is not sick, the one crying over here in just his diaper is the one that is sick! Guest guest
I feel for you , very much my dear! It will be all over soon and you will only look forward to less time, not more. It's a long time while you're in it, but afterwards doesn't feel like it at all. Kinda like being pregnant :~} I wanted to comment about the pigeon toed thing. I had 3 cousins who wore the DBB for this, and it was indeed found that it didn't help intoeing. In fact, Dr. Ponseti's paper stating as such was so well received that docs all over discarded the DBB. Funny thing, his paper about clubfoot came out at about the same time but was not read or received well. Such a shame... So there are lots of older parents out there who had children in the DBB and were told eventually that all that time and effort they put into bracing their child was for naught. I ran into an older couple just 2 days ago who commented the same thing but they proclaimed that *It worked!* for their intoed child. I of course explained that it was found that it doesn't work for intoeing but after corrective non-surgical casting it does indeed maintain correction. Funny thing, they walked away from the experience still fully believing that it worked for intoeing. Oh well... I often take Darbi out of the house in the morning while I take her brothers to school. Since she's riding in the car I can make sure she gets her 12 hours that way and sometimes she even gets a little longer. So she goes into the school rooms with her brace on all the time. Crawls up on the chairs and grabs pens and crayons and goes to it in the school rooms. She has no idea she can't do anything in her DBB. There is a set of stairs, rather high ones actually, in her brother's preschool room going to the playroom and she hauls herself up those with a quickness because she knows there's babies and pretend food in there. If I never let her out of the house I would never hear any comments about the DBB... or anything because no one would ever know she had a foot problem at all. Which is exactly what we want right? But it's also an opportunity to educate people to the idea that clubfoot isn't a surgical thing anymore and also while the DBB looks barbaric... we find that it really isn't. I'm the one who upon hearing my daughter would need casting and bracing for clubfoot sat there and told the doc all about my 3 cousins who wore this horrible brace that tied their feet together back in the 70's... and of course it was at that point he told me that's exactly what my daughter would wear for 2 years. Ack! lol... hang in there, it only gets better :~} Kori At 07:08 AM 12/5/2004, you wrote: >We haven't even finished 2 months yet (although we are close). It just >feels like forever!! Guest guest
Clubfoot wasn't new to my in-laws, my MIL has a cf son (other issues too) and she has a 16 yrold grandson with it also. They didn't treat the son's foot cuz he couldn't have walked either way. The 16 yr old has gone through numerous surgeries at Shriners with very poor results and still must wear an AFO type thing to walk at all. So when Everett was born, they were skeptical to say the least and all worried he'd suffer the same fate. Even now they remain skeptical and often give a pity paryt to Everett wearing the DBB for all these years to come, so once in a while I take him over there with it on and let him play around, showing everyone it isn't terrible, barbaric or confining to him at all. They look at the results we've gotten thus far though and cannot complain my method of treatment was better! s. She has no idea she can't do anything in her DBB. Guest guest
, Oh I know (we all do) just how long those three months feel. You know there is light at the end of the tunnel, it just seems like that tunnel goes on and on an on... Trust me, once you get past those three months the rest really does seem to fly. I can't believe we're already to nights only! It does seem like only yesterday we were doing 23/7. I remember all too well people telling me " Oh, my daughter, or my niece, etc. had to wear those " - some would say they had " clubfoot " others would say their feet were pigeon toed. It was bothersome because I would find myself feeling pressure (self imposed) to going into this elaborate explaination of WHY it wasn't clubfoot that they were dealing with (more than likely) and why Zach's was definitely MORE than just being pigeon toed. It did get tiring and frustrating - so after some time, I stopped the lengthy discussions and would simply answer " oh, really - hmmm " Just know that we all feel for you and can relate completely. The whole process can be one big frustration - that is until you progress further and can look at it from my perspective - you'll feel SO incredibly proud of everything you've done. BIG HUGS! Guest guest
... If it makes u feel any better... got his hours reduced a month ago and I am actually finding this harder than when he wore them 23 hours a day. He is getting so mad when i go to put them on at night and is constantly waking up because he wants his shoes off. I hope this is just a phase and it goes away soon. No one ever said motherhood was easy... but these damn shoes certainly don't make it any easier!!! Guest guest
nothing... that's basically what Dr. Ponseti's paper said IIRC. It works itself out apparently. Sometimes it doesn't, but that's more the rare case than what most children experience. One aunt was very diligent with the brace, and her daughter wore it for about a year till she was three or something like that. I remember Tara walking unaided across the floor in hers (I am the oldest of 16 grandchildren) and thinking it was a horrible brace and that she wasn't intoeing that I could see anyway. Another aunt went to a different doc than the one who prescribed it and discarded it upon his advice (he probably read the paper lol). I don't know what the other one did, but she's nuts and has been heard to remark that Darbi's clubfoot is hereditary or something and all stemmed from her having MS (which we don't even think she has, hypochondriac aunt and MS is her latest ailment ya know...). I loved that one... Bring it on Aunt Freaky... they don't know what causes it but if you can find a way to bring the attention onto yourself from my daughter's deal it MUST be because of you... grrrr... Loved the bird comment too. Too funny! Please, eat my aunt! Guest guest
The last month is going to go by faster than you think! Grace is 2 days away from going down in wear time - to 16 hrs (YEAH). Guest guest
It's funny, I think people's mindset changed from the cast to the shoes. When they saw the cast they thought " What did she do to that baby? " and when they saw the shoes they thought " What is wrong with that baby? " I keep trying to think that January 14th isn't that far.this Saturday is my birthday - I am going to be 30 :-(, then next Friday is my son 's birthday, then Christmas, then New Year's ...oh my goodness.I better get moving. I am sure we will look back at this someday and thought it went by in a blink of an eye. Noone has approached me about 's feet. Surprising actually. I think mosr people are afraid to ask. Guest guest
HAPPY BIRTHDAY. My husband's birthday is also Saturday. At least you're two months into it. I couldn't get past the first weekend without having to go back in casts. Aidan's blisters need to heel. Oh well, try, try, & try again. I flunked the DBB test!! :-) How did Christian take to the casts at first? How long did it take him to adjust. I honestly think Aidan was beginning to adjust a little but then the dreaded blisters. Bummed in San ! :-) :-( Gerace cgerace@...> wrote: It's funny, I think people's mindset changed from the cast to the shoes. When they saw the cast they thought " What did she do to that baby?
