Guest guest
I just started on WIC (Women, Infants and Children) last month. I didn't even think I would be eligible. I am not sure what state you are in, but here in Pennsylvania they offer a lot of good things to pregnant women and their babies. For starters here's what I get every month from WIC. I get 3 checks. Each check lists items that you can purchase and that store you chose to shop at when you signed up for WIC. One check had 2- 1/2 gallons of milk, 2 juice, 1 dozen eggs, 1 lb of cheese. Another check was 3 - 1/2 gallons of milk, 2 juice. And I get one really large check, 3- 1/2 gallons of milk, 2 juice, 1 dozen eggs, 1 jar peanut butter, 1 lb cheese, and 36 oz of cereal. It saved me about $40 last month I think!! They gave me a pamphlet which tells you what types of cheeses, juice and cereal you are allowed to use your WIC on. If I don't purchase everything on each individual check, I lose it. So basically, I just get everything on the check everytime I decide to use one. I can't use all the milk, so I usually give some to my mom. I have heard that if you aren't really " using " your WIC checks, they will probably take you off the program. The checks do have a expiration date, usually only good for a month. Once the baby comes, the checks will be mostly used to buy formula for the baby, or if I would breastfeed I think tuna and carrots are items that are WIC approved and supposed to be good for breastfeeding women. I am planning on bottle feeding. I really was only interested in trying to see if I would qualify for WIC for when the baby comes to cover the cost of formula. I hear how expensive it is and man, between that and diapers, there goes your budget!!! I never had to provide info on my diet, all I had to do was have my dr sign the form and fill out my weight and my hemoglobin level. I work for a large Family Practice and the nurse who takes care of all the OB patients told me here in Pennsylvania, all they care about is your income....if you are within the limits, you qualify!! My husband has been out of work for a little while and with just my income we just make it to qualify. Don't get me wrong, things would be soooo much easier if we had 2 incomes instead of one, but it may all work out for the best when the baby comes. He is trying to start his own business and working out of the house will definetly save us money on daycare!! So, we may be better off with things this way! I hope I was of some help. Best of Luck to you! Beverly Pittsburgh, PA RNY4/10/02 335-------145 First Baby!! I didn't take the time to look up the pay rate for an E-4, but I'm pretty sure you qualify as you enlisted folks don't get paid enough. WIC for military folk isn't really looked at as " welfare " it is actually looked at as another benefit of the military, so you take advantage of it I would say. Since you guys are military I wouldn't say there is a down side to it since they look at it as a benefit, so its all upside. My husband is a Captain over 17 so we don't qualify, but it sure would be nice since we don't have a commissary around here to grocery shop at. Cost of living here in Minnesota is very high, especially without any benefits of a active military facility around. Axelrod WIC? Guest guest
I am on wic too. I was breastfeeding when I started. I received checks for milk, cheese, tuna, beans or peanutbutter, eggs and carrots for myself. After my son turned one they stopped my checks. The woman at wic said that if I was not breast feeding I would get checks for formula instead. You only have the choice of one brand of formula, and the choice of reg. or soy based. She said you received more checks for yourself to feed the baby than with formula checks. Each of my other two children get a set of checks each too for milk eggs cheese, cereal and peanutbutter. As long as I qualify they will receive checks until the age of 5. As for the diet questions, the ask everytime when I go in what the kids ate the day before. The want to make sure you and they are eating enough servings out of each food group. They will tell you which food groups to add to and which ones to cut back on. Its no big deal and does not affect you receiving checks. It is a great program. I am only sorry I waited so long to apply. I just thought I would not qualify. Cheryl Re: WIC? Guest guest
WIC is to help supplement your foods. They give the pregnant mom and children up to 5 years old Milk, Eggs, Cheeses, Cereal and Juice and when the baby is born they give you Fomula. You will get it monthly. Around here they give you WIC checks that say what you cang et with it, Like 1 1/2 gals milk, 2 cans juice, 1 doz egg, ect and you buy those and give the grocery clerk the check and she makes sure you got everything and rings you up, you sign the check and off you go. It is very easy and convenient. I lvoed it for formula when I needed it for twins, What a life saver that was. Every state goes by your income and how many are in the family, they DO include the new baby as a member even if it is not here yet. I do not know if they do the foodstamps and medicaid at the WIC office but I am sure they can direct you where to go if they don't. We have what is called the MOMS program where they sign Moms up for WIC, Foodstamps and Medicaid and also a health nurse to help you out with anything you may need. They are very nice and I am glad that the younger girls have them for guidance. They seem to take their advice better than that of their parents. You should go sign up for it all if you can, you never know and they are good programs. Good Luck God Bless, Robin, NorthEastern, NY EDD- July 27th, 2004 IT'S A BOY!!!!!! Guest guest
How do you qualify for WIC? Im afraid i make too much money; which isnt alot at all LOL!
Guest guest
WIC is a program for women, infants and children. They provide you with coupons to get items such as milk, cheese, cereal, juice. You have to be pregnant, less than 6 months post-partum (or after miscarriage), have a medical reason (low iron, bad diet) or have children under the age of five to qualify. You can qualify for each child and/or yourself if you meet the qualifications. Income levels are higher for WIC than they are for foodstamps or medicaid. Medicaid and food stamps require different qualifications depending on the state. You might qualify for those as well. The reason why you were asked what you ate is because they base what they give you on your average diet. Rasley mailto: drasley@... Guest guest
, Income levels for WIC are high -- I believe my ex and I qualified when he was earning $27k a year and I was pregnant with our daughter. The levels are much higher than for food stamps. Do look into it okay? Rasley mailto: drasley@... BTC, Columbus, 10/7/98 Re: WIC? > How do you qualify for WIC?
