I tend to be one of the folks who don't encourage amniocentesis, but I will tell you something -- if an amnio will help ease your mind, then the minimal risk that the procedure poses might be outweighed by the risk that your constant worrying throughout the pregnancy would have an adverse effect on your little boy. I used to say that line about why amnio if you wouldn't terminate, but I don't agree with that anymore. If there's a legitimate reason, having an amnio can be a tremendous help in preparing for what might be to come. What if your baby had a condition which could be repaired by prenatal surgery? If your doctor is that crass about the whole thing, you might want to consider seeing someone else who will actually TREAT you instead of making rude generalizations. -Kris (your ListMom who's been battling a case of pneumonia for the past several days) (wheeze wheeze hack hack)

Guest guest
I am 39 years old, pregnant with baby number 1, and I had am amnio on October 20th of last year. My husband and I discussed at length (!) the pros and cons and decided we wanted to be as informed as possible as to any potential problems that may have come up with this baby. I felt the risks of the procedure were relatively small compared to the risks of my age, etc. Yes, I was scared going in, mostly of the unknown (like how it would feel etc.) After all was said and done, my anxiety far outweighed the actual procedure. The needle part didn't hurt, only the momentary prick and cramp when the uterus is pierced. ***NOTE*** This is my OPINION only. If the doctor had told me the things he's told you, *I*, and this is only *ME*, would have it done. I'm a factual type, black-and-white personality, and I believe in being as informed with facts as possible. I sincerely pray that all is well with your little guy- I know it's the 'pat' answer and you've been told this a zillion times, as I was also and it doesn't help with the decision, but it's such a personal choice. I wish for you to be guided by your heart in the right direction.
