The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation established this initiative to encourage and support students in completing college and continuing on to earn masters and doctorate degrees in disciplines where ethnic and racial groups are currently underrepresented. The Gates Millennium Scholars awards will ultimately enable 20,000 young Americans to attend undergraduate and graduate institutions of their choice and be prepared to assume important roles as leaders in their professions and in their communities. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Individuals selected as GMS Scholars will receive funds in an amount to be allocated by GMS based on financial need. The award will be based on the cost of tuition, fees, books, and living expenses for the 2001-2002 academic year, as well as the availability of grants and other scholarships reported on the submitted financial aid award letter. Gates Millennium Scholarship awards may be offered to 2001-2002 Scholars who qualify in succeeding years of full-time undergraduate study and graduate study in engineering, mathematics, science, education, and library science, academic discipline areas where ethnic and racial groups are currently underrepresented.
