Guest guest
Hi all, I was hoping to get my regular MD to to a Lactate/Pyruvate test because the only one I had was over a year ago with my muscle biopsy. From reading some of your messages it seems that there is a particular procedure that needs to be followed to get a proper result. Can anyone tell me what that is or where I can find it listed online? Also, is there a lab that seems to be better than others for this type of test? Thanks, Lea
Guest guest
Lea The lactate acid test is very easily affected by many things. The big thing is that using a tourniquet can cause the results to be elevated. Some labs insist that if they use the tourniquet, but remove it before they remove the blood that it is okay. The hospital I have it done at, does do it without a tourniquet at all. I also have it done at the hospital itself, rather than a sattelite where there is transportation time involved. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 19:16:08 -0000 > To: > Subject: Lactate/Pyruvate testing > > > > Hi all, > > I was hoping to get my regular MD to to a Lactate/Pyruvate test > because the only one I had was over a year ago with my muscle biopsy. > >> From reading some of your messages it seems that there is a > particular procedure that needs to be followed to get a proper > result. Guest guest
The particular procedure depends on the lab you use. In the U.S., Labcorp and Quest are two common labs, the place where you have the testing done (probably a hospital) has to look up the procedure and make sure they have the materials (not expensive, but not on the shelf at every hospital) and personnel (need someone to take sample to the lab techs for processing IMMEDIATELY). So really, the only reason to look up the exact procedure is to convince yourself the hospital is doing it right, the hospital has to follow their procedures exactly (down to the tube color and type). Take care, RH > > > Hi all, > > I was hoping to get my regular MD to to a Lactate/Pyruvate test > because the only one I had was over a year ago with my muscle biopsy. > > From reading some of your messages it seems that there is a > particular procedure that needs to be followed to get a proper > result. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for replying. I feel more comfortable now in requesting the test from my regular doctor.
