Guest guest
Hi... I learned of this group from another club foot support group. Looks like there are a few same members but I am going to post and see if by chance there is someone out there with my similar situation that can give me some insight. I am Amy. My oldest son ph (6 yrs old) was born with bilateral clubfoot. He wore his first set of cast (from knees down) when he was 9 days old. The cast were changed every 2 weeks until the othopedic informed us at 4 months that ph wasn't responding to casting and that surgery was needed. My husband nor I had ever heard of the Ponseti method until last week when I joined the other support group...boy do I wish we had heard about it when ph was born!!! He had the surgery and wore full length cast for 5 weeks. Then the full length braces (KAFO) for a few months and then to the 1/2 length braces (AFO) for a few months...all the braces were only worn at night time per the orthopedics directions. When ph was around a 1 1/2 yrs old, we were released from the orthopedic's care (now I am realizing that was all too soon). ph has gradually gotten worse over the years with his feet turning in and now has expressed some pain issues. I have looked at Dr Ponseti's website and found there are 3 drs in Georgia that are " Qualified for the Ponseti method " but my understanding is that ph is too old for that method. I have scheduled an appointment for next Thursday with one of the 3 drs on the " qualified " list but wanted to see if anyone had an experience similar to mine. I fear surgery is our only option but want to do all the research I can before our appt in case there might be another alternative. Please feel free to email me at amyblank88 @ yahoo.com if any of you have or know of anyone who has experienced anything similar to my experience. Thanks so much... Guest guest
Dear Amy, man nothing worse than finding out too late our kids went through all that hell for nothing. I have a 6 year old son also, born with pretty bad bilateral club feet. He didn't go through as much as your ph, but the story is about the same....when he was 2 years old I found Dr. Ponseti. It was too late to cast him in to correction but they did a surgery referred to here as the ATTT that was pretty non-invasive. Basically they take a tendon in the foot loose and re-attach it to to another place to pull the foot in to a straight(er) form. I've heard this surgery has some success in older children too but that may depend on the operations he's already had. In any event, you can't hurt anything by seeking a Ponseti opinion, perhaps even speak with Dr. Ponseti personally over the phone or email. It's no consolation to you now but you're not alone - and I think I have some idea as to how you're feeling now looking back wishing you knew then what you know. My son will always have " bad feet " , too. I'm sorry. s. New here... Hi... I learned of this group from another club foot support group.
