Guest guest
Welcome to the site! I will let others answer your questions, I just wanted to say that we do not flame here, so don't worry. We speak our mind, but respect the opinions viewed as long as they don't hurt anyone. If anything, this board supports and builds up and encourages one to find answers. So, good luck, post a lot, and learn! Guest guest
Hi, I'm pretty new here too and just wanted to say that you're not alone. My 3 year old son was just dx'd with PDD and has language/speech problems, but with high intellectual abilities and truly adores affection (so I guess he'd be mild? high functioning? not sure of these labels yet). Point is, I've had him on a CF diet with good results, I think, but have never managed to go truly GF and gave up trying. We've been on enzymes for a week, and I can't tell you yet how it's going to work out but so far so good. So don't feel like a heel for not going strictly GFCF. I know that if I absolutely had to, for his sake, I would find a way to do it. But I'm hoping the enzymes do the trick. Good luck to you and stick around! > hi, > wow, what a find! this listserv has so much info, i am overwhemlmed! > i have a 3yr old girl, high functioning autism & severe apraxia of > speech. thru testing we have found she is allergic to gluten, casein, > eggs & more, just starting to go cf & cut down on gluten. kirkman has > reccomended to use enzymes with the gfcf diet, does anyone have > experience with not strictly enforcing the diet, but using enzymes > instead? so far cutting down on gluten has been pretty unsuccesfull, > since she has not liked any subsitute foods,(like crackers, corn > cereals etc.) are the enzymes in kirkman's complete with dpp IV > without using the diet strictly? thanks for any info, please no > flames, i truly would appreciate help in deciding what is the best to > try to help my little girl. we are supplementing with supernuthera & > have been doing aba with great results so far. thanks! annie's mom
Guest guest
From personal experience I can tell you that the gfcf diet didn't work for us until strictly enforced. It was tough and my daughter hated, hated, hated giving up her favorite foods and literally lived on rice pasta with sauce and Gorilla munch cereal/rice milk for quite awhile. The amazing thing is after awhile not only did she accept substitutes for her favorite foods(She loves grilled Tofutti cheese sandwiches and pbj on gfcf homemade bread) but she started trying new foods she wouldn't touch before like hotdogs, waffles, etc. Now mind you she'd still probably kill for a big bowl of mac and cheese LOL but she generally likes her foods. Have you tried ordering from places like Miss.Robens? We started trying enzymes just last week after being completely gfcf since last summer and so far they have helped with a couple of food infractions(thank you holidays!) so we'll see. I would be thrilled beyond words if she could eventually eat some of her old favorites. She loves Tofutti ice cream but I would love to take her to an ice cream stand again!! Good luck. I use enzymes from this site http://www.houstonni.com/ My son can have casein now, plus many other foods he did not tolerate before enzymes, but they do not help him with gluten or eggs, or a few other foods. But some children enzymes help with all foods, so you would have to see how the specific enzymes you choose, work with your own child. so far cutting down on gluten has been pretty unsuccesfull, > since she has not liked any subsitute foods,(like crackers, corn > cereals etc.) are the enzymes in kirkman's complete with dpp IV > without using the diet strictly? I have heard conflicting information from Kirkman on whether those enzymes are recommended for use without being at least mostly gfcf, and using the enzymes only for infractions. So I would recommend you either ask Kirkman what is their recommendation, or you can just use them however you want, whether or not gfcf, and see if they help your child. > thanks for any info, please no > flames, If you want flames, I can give you urls of sites where if you even so much as ASK a question that is not within the current philosophy, you will receive major flames. However, THIS site is not one of those sites. Welcome! i truly would appreciate help in deciding what is the best to > try to help my little girl. we are supplementing with supernuthera & > have been doing aba with great results so far. thanks! annie's mom Congrats on your current great results! I will repeat what Devin said. I have belonged to this group for almost three months (and lurked longer than that) and have never seen any flaming. We support each other, whether you stay with the diet or not. There is no judging. So welcome - and you are right, this site was more info, and knowledgeable people than any others I belong to. My son NIcholas will be three in two days, and he is high functioning as well. We started the GFCF diet when he was 1.10 and had great results immediately. Unfortunately, we did not find he ever did adjust well to the foods. We obeyed it to the letter (no infringements) but he ended up eating nothing but french fries, GFCF donuts/cookies (Kinnikinnick.com is the best GFCF foods), GFCF toast with cinnamon/brn. sugar and bananas. I tried so many different foods, but he never would eat them. I was very frustrated, so for us, when I heard about the enzymes, I knew this would be the way to go for us. We have been on the enzymes for almost three months, and the results have been spectacular. We are able to " cheat " on the diet, although we try to limit the amount of casein or gluten at one sitting. Nick not only did not regress with the enzymes + no diet, he improved even further. Some choose to stay with the diet and use the enzymes only to " catch " any unknown peptides and this works well for them. BY the way, we are on the Houston enzymes. Guest guest
Hi, Annie's mom! My son was gluten-free, casein-free, soy-free, corn-free, and dozens of other stuff free for about a year before we started the enzymes from Houston's. We did some planned infractions, then I slowly started taking my son off the diet with the use of the enzymes with all foods. My son benefited from the diet, but he kept developing food sensitivities and I feared we were running out of options other than to try to just rotate some foods. At first, I started the enzymes with all foods and just did some infractions. Not only did my son not react to the infractions, but his behavior changed dramatically. His teachers reported many improvements within two weeks of starting the enzymes. The enzymes were obviously breaking down problem foods I wasn't even aware were a problem. My son has been off the diet for nearly eight months and is doing well. He still stims at home, but all other areas have improved significantly. You can read our story in the files section at this site. I can't give you much info about Kirkman's stand on the diet, because it has changed a few times and some of the info. from them has been conflicting, so I'm not sure what it is currently. I would check their site and/or call them to get a definitive answer. Many of us here, though, have had success with going off the diet with the Houston enzymes if that is any comfort to you. Hope this helps, > hi, > wow, what a find! this listserv has so much info, i am overwhemlmed! > i have a 3yr old girl, high functioning autism & severe apraxia of > speech. thru testing we have found she is allergic to gluten, casein, > eggs & more, just starting to go cf & cut down on gluten. kirkman has > reccomended to use enzymes with the gfcf diet, does anyone have > experience with not strictly enforcing the diet, but using enzymes > instead? so far cutting down on gluten has been pretty unsuccesfull, > since she has not liked any subsitute foods,(like crackers, corn > cereals etc.) are the enzymes in kirkman's complete with dpp IV > without using the diet strictly? thanks for any info, please no > flames, i truly would appreciate help in deciding what is the best to > try to help my little girl. we are supplementing with supernuthera & > have been doing aba with great results so far. thanks! annie's mom
