Guest guest
You could " test " the tightness with your finger - by trying to put your finger under the strap on each shoe, it should feel the same regardless of what hole, does that make sense? I don't know about the bruise, hope he's OK. s. red spot So now I'm stressed. My 11 week old son has had the shoes and dbb on for just over a week. One of his ankles looks like it is bruised. Should I be concerned? It doesn't seem to bother him and when I squeeze his foot, he doesn't cry out at all. In fact, he doesn't seem to be bothered with me touching his feet at all. I didn't used to be able to even touch them without him pulling them away. After we noticed his ankle being red, we also noticed that one of the shoes had more holes in the strap then the other and we've been tightening them to the same hole on each side. The side that has only 9 holes is the one with the red ankle and the side without the redness has 10 holes, but we are putting the strap into the 3rd from the last on each one. I know this sounds confusing, but what should I do?
Guest guest
Our daughter developed redness on the tops of her feet after a couple of weeks in the s her ankles seem to stay a bit red as well. The redness does not go away during her hour off but it has never really seemed to bother her at all. I have heard from one of the other mommies on this board that her child also had redness from shoe wear that did not go away either. I started not tying the laces as tightly as before and it has gone away a bit. As I have gotten to know my daughter and her behaviour in the shoes, I realised that I didn't need to be tightening the laces so much as she dosen't kick them off at all and her foot has not been slipping. It took a bit of time to find the " happy medium " with how tight I was doing them up. I was so parinoid of her feet slipping in them that I did them up as tight as I could at first. I have also noticed that her heels sit ALL the way down in the shoes so much easier now. I found it a bit challenging at first in the 00's as her feet were so little. Now that they have grown a bit, I think they are going to fit in the shoes better from here on in. You may find the same thing with your son. When you say bruised, do you mean redness or is it actually purplish? I have also heard that if the heel is all the way down in the shoes you can't really tighten the strap too much. I have gone down 2 holes in the shoes since we have had them as she is growing like a weed! When you tighten the strap and then pull on the shoes they should stay in place. As long as you can rub his feet and it dosen't bother him, I wouldn't worry too much. You too will find your " happy medium " it just takes a bit of time. & Grace Unilateral RCF DBB 23/7 (down to 16 hrs on Dec 7th HOPEFULLY!!!) > You could " test " the tightness with your finger - by trying to put your finger under the strap on each shoe, it should feel the same regardless of what hole, does that make sense? Guest guest
His feet seem to pop into place rather easily so I'm not too worried about the heel being down. I'm just worried about the strap being on too tight. My husband seems to think the ankle is red because it isn't on as tight as the other one and its causing it to rub. The other ankle isn't red and that is the strap that is on tighter. I think both straps are on way too tight, but he doesn't seem to be bothered by either one. > > You could " test " the tightness with your finger - by trying to put > your finger under the strap on each shoe, it should feel the same > regardless of what hole, does that make sense? Guest guest
That does seem a bit strange that the tighter shoe is on the foot that is not red hmmmmm but I think if the ankle were rubbing, you would have seen signs of a blister already. Are both his feet affected? Grace has RCF so her left foot is a bit bigger and is definately more red than her right one. That is great that his heel is going all the way down in the shoes! One less thing to worry about! It is a bit of a catch 22...you don't want the shoe's to be too loose as the foot will rub and cause a blister or sore but you don't want them too tight as it causes a lot of redness! I will take the lesser of the two evils for sure. Since the redness does not seem to bother her I am not too worried about it but I am keeping a close eye on it! & Grace > > > You could " test " the tightness with your finger - by trying to > put > > your finger under the strap on each shoe, it should feel the same > > regardless of what hole, does that make sense? Guest guest
Our 10 week old also has a " bruised " looking ankle. He is also not bothered when we touch this spot. I took him to the orthotocist who had initially given us training regarding the DBB and Markell boots. He showed me how to really break in the shoes. Basically just work them really well with your hands to try and soften up the leather. He also said to make sure to pull socks up after you are done lacing and buckling the shoes. The orthotocist was not worried about the redness. He did say to look for a watery blister and that we should be concerned if we see anything of this nature. Is there anyone you can take your son to for a check? I know that I had such peace of mind after having someone else take a look. Hope that helps! Guest guest
Thank you! That definitely makes me feel better. We have an appt tomorrow with a different dr just so we can get a second opinion. I'm hoping he's going to say everything is ok and that I'm just being a little paranoid. > Our 10 week old also has a " bruised " looking ankle. He is also not bothered > when we touch this spot. Guest guest
From what I've heard on this board you shouldn't worry about getting the straps in the same hole on each side. It only makes sense because their feet aren't the same size (if unilateral). Ava only has a right CF & we don't count or anything. I just pull the straps tight & buckle them. I'm not really sure what hole they're in. The other thing mentioned before is the straps are leather & with use they will stretch, so the hole you start in might not be tight enough after a while. I think she's already on a tighter strap & she's only been in the shoes 1 week. But like I said, we didn't keep track so I'm not really sure!!! As to the redness, if you wore tight boots 23 hours a day, I think your feet would be pretty red too!! It doesn't seem to bother her, I just massage Ava's feet during her hour off. I started out using lotion, but it made her feet STINKY!!! So now I've switched to just a little Vitamin E oil. Hopefully not so smelly now! , mommy of: Guinevere, on, Ava 8/4/04 right CF DBB 23/7 (7 whole days and counting!!)
