Guest guest
, There was some discussion about this a few weeks ago. It seems everybody is different. Even in the Global Help Booklet it says 2 different things. Some measure from bolt to bolt, some the distance between the heels. From what I gather anything from the bolts outward is okay, it's whatever your baby is comfortable with. My daughter is happy with her's measured from bolt to bolt, so the space between her heels is fairly small. I know some other babies on here like their feet further apart. If you have an adjustable bar, you could see how he reacts once he's in it. Maybe start by measuring from the bolts & go out from there if he seems fussy. Or the other way around (measure from the heels & work inward if he's unhappy). Hope this helps! , mommy of: Guinevere, on, Ava 8/4/04 right CF DBB 23/7 > > Just wondering what everyone's experience has been with the length > of the bar causing sores or just a fussy baby who has trouble > adjusting to the bar. Guest guest
Has he been out of shoes this entire time? I would be very cautious with that...that would be a red flag to me as you don't want him out of his shoes for any length of time, except for the alloted. Usually when there are sores, kids on here have had to go back into casts to allow them to heal and yet not relapse at the same time. right now I would be more concerned with that. That really bothers me if he's been out of his shoes that whole time. > > Just wondering what everyone's experience has been with the length > of the bar causing sores or just a fussy baby who has trouble > adjusting to the bar. Guest guest
I also have a question regarding this.... At what age did most of your kids need a longer bar? is almost 11 months and still in the 8 inch bar. His shoulders seem to measure the same still.. he is really small for his age. Just curious when most of the babies needed a bigger bar. 2.9.04 DBB 12 hours jagrindon jagrindon@...> wrote: Just wondering what everyone's experience has been with the length of the bar causing sores or just a fussy baby who has trouble adjusting to the bar. Guest guest
I think that most of us on this list have adjustable length bars. This enables us to adjust the length ourselves as needed. I do a 'visual' check about once a month...I hold the brace across Owen's back just to make sure that his shoulders 'fit' in between the shoes on the bar. If they don't quite fit, I widen his bar until they do. You can see a picture of this at 's Ponseti Links site here: http://pages.ivillage.com/ponseti_links/id9.html Just scroll down a bit on this page. Guest guest
Yes, he has been out of the shoes since Dec. 14th. I too was very concerned about relapsing but Dr. Dobbs has checked his foot the last two weeks and hasn't seen any sign of relapse. He did not want to put Sammy in a healing cast because the sores on his heels were so bad, he wanted them to be open to air, he did not feel they would heal properly with all the sweating going on inside the cast or in the shoes. We have been doing stretching exercises religiously, about 5-6 times a day and his foot is very flexible. The sores on his heels are almost completely healed now and we are going to start the brace again tomorrow. > > > > Just wondering what everyone's experience has been with the length > > of the bar causing sores or just a fussy baby who has trouble > > adjusting to the bar. Guest guest
Interesting, since that'd put the brace about 4 " longer than I set Darbi's. Seems like that'd be way too much. Have you held the brace up to his shoulders to see how much further apart his heels are than his shoulders? If the brace is too far apart you may notice that his feet aren't dorsiflexed enough. I would absolutely not want an 11 " bar on my 2.5 month old child. If his shoulders are 8 " , his bar should be 8 " . Where did this guy find information to say to add 2 " ?? That's just weird and very, very wrong. I'm surprised is comfortable. Darbs didn't get a bar that long till she was over a year old. Did the guy bend the bar so the feet are dorsiflexed? If he didn't do that, those far apart feet are absolutely not getting enough dorsiflexion, you can see the physics of this... the further apart the feet are the more pointed down they are. Guest guest
If the sores were THAT bad... you really should consider not allowing ANY pressure on that area. Because if they're almost healed... they can and will come back very quickly even without much pressure. Ask Dr. Dobbs to cut a hole in the back of the shoes, because beyond not being able to wear the brace again for a while no baby deserves sores like that on their feet... and especially not twice. I'm sure you know, you just don't want to go through this again so eliminate anything that *might* cause a sore and you'll be on your way into the 23/7. Guest guest
good! I am so glad to hear you have been in contact and faithful with the stretches in that time out of the brace. Ater going through a relapse, I just hate to hear of anyone else going through that! Keep stretching! Guest guest
We too kept our daughter out of a cast or shoes for a week after her last cast, she had no tenotomy, but our doctor (Dr. Pirani, Ponseti certified) wanted to ensure she had full correction so she wore the last cast for 3 weeks. She had a growth spurt and her leg was purple and she had a couple of open wounds when we finally removed her cast. Even if it meant she needed to go into another cast (relapse), I wanted to give her little leg and foot time to heal before she went into the shoes. It is so hard when you see your little one with sores/blisters etc! I hope Sammy's foot is feeling better and good luck with the shoes! & Grace > > > > > > Just wondering what everyone's experience has been with the > length > > > of the bar causing sores or just a fussy baby who has trouble > > > adjusting to the bar. Guest guest
lol, 7-8 mo's here. She got a 10 " bar and it was long overdue. It's size that dictates the change though, not age. If he's small for his age, that would seem to explain it. Just put it up to his shoulders every now and then and you'll know when it's time for a new one. The one thing about a smaller bar is that it's easier for them to roll over under covers than with a longer one. When we switched to the 10 " bar it also coincided with her waking a lot at night and we had to devise some way to cover her to keep warm yet not let her get tangled in the covers and wake up. So if he's 11 mo's he's well on his way to being a little more self sufficient at night and better able to deal with a longer bar when he does get it. I'd think...
