Guest guest
WOW Debby, I seem to be the only one up this late but all I can say is OH MY! I can't believe they were not better able to help you. I pray that Adam will get better soon, this just sounds so scary. I hope you can both sleep tonight. In prayer, Pattie > Last night I listed to Jodi, tongue in cheek, my woes and trials and tribulations. > Boy did I not see what was to happen a couple of hours later!!! > > Adam has had a fever around 102.6 degrees for a couple of days. Last night at 12:30ish he hollered for me and I went in and he was shaking uncontrollably and complaining he was cold. > > I got a bunch of blankets, and lied on him to warm him with my body. It went on for 15 minutes and wasn't stopping. > > Yelled for Colette (yes yelled as I was freaked) to get one of my medical books. As I talked and he went lethargic and his skin went all patchy and his eyes were rolling in his head, I took the temp. again > > 105. > > As I tried to explain Silver syndrome (they get soooooo STUCK on that.....remember the plastercine on the penis episode?? I'm trying to say FORGET it! I mention it because you need TO KNOW he's 10.5 yrs. old but he's SMALL) I took the temp. again > > 107. > > OK now the nurse is saying forget it, get him to emerg. She says " are you alone " . Yup. OK don't drive get an ambulance, he has a seizure in the car and it'll be dangerous for you both. > > Call 9-1-1.......quickly explain and THEY want to check his Motrin dosage (oh I should tell you I gave him Motrin at 9:30 and this was 12:30----that's 8 hour med. so I couldn't give him more and I couldn't lift my lifeless, shaking uncontrollably son out of his bed).........so then THEY want the explanation on the small weight and what is RSS. > > Take his temp again..........108.1 > > Then the ambulance guys arrive. And they start up again with the RSS. I am running around the house trying to answer their questions, get dressed (never made it to the bathroom) and find shoes etc. (forget to bring Adam's!!) They put oxygen on him right away and monitored his vitals for about 10 minutes while they " discussed " what to do. > So the one paramedic lifts Adam up and he just flips " OH man is he ever HOT!! Feel this kid " he says to his partner and the 4 gorgeous firemen all crowded into Adam's little room with me (and I'm thinking " I didn't even put on my make up today UG!) > > They decide Adam can walk to the door. Well he takes 4 steps and throws up all over the paramedics and himself. So I put all the stuff down in my arms, and run around the firemen blocking my way to some towels. The nurse yells at the paramedics " don't come any closer " . Lots of discussion and then the big question " you been to any doctors offices lately " . > Well yes, I was at Sick Kids on Tuesday but on June 2nd Adam came with me to my back surgeon who works in a building joined to the hospital currently shut down due to SARS. > > Well that's all they needed to hear. Adam becomes a potential SARS case and they have to find us an isolation room. Took 10 minutes and they found a depilated old room that exited right out on the street. Adam is wheeled in that way and I'm told not to leave the room. > > Now he has to go poop. Ends up 4 bouts of diarrhea but there is no bathroom. I buzz for instructions and a few minutes later the door opens a crack and a hand (honest to God JUST a hand) slips into view and says " here use the bed pan " (a few hours later when I couldn't hold it any longer the same suspecting hand tossed a bed pan in for me to use). > > Long and short of it. No one really monitored Adam. I had to administer medication threw the door from " the hand " and eventually the doctor came in around 5 a.m. all suited up in the SARS gear. He figured it was gastro-intestinal and I'm trying to NOT think SARS but I have to be honest, " he's had the fever but has been eating normally and no pain he just complained he couldn't 'get air in his nose and mouth' " > Well off they scrambled to call the infectious disease centre and around 6:30 a.m. they came in and said they wanted us into quarantine until his fever breaks and but if he gets any laboured breathing they gave us masks and said come right back down. > > Asked the nurse how I could get a taxi since I can't leave the room (which had no phone) and she said " leave by the door you came in " (I now know what being treated like someone with the plague feels like) and they'd call the taxi. > > Adam threw up in the back of the taxi on the way home and $27.50 for the cab ride and a generous tip and we were home. Saw my daughter off to school (my mom drove her) and Adam and I slept the whole day. > > He hasn't eaten much, has had no more episodes of vomiting and his fever is gone. > > I told my dad to note if they start discussing a probable " child SARS " case to know only HIS grandson would be the one!! So far the youngest SARS patient we have is almost 17 yrs old and his mom is a nurse and he caught it from her when she got it. > > So there you go just when I thought my life couldn't get any worse. I also told my daughter that after her telling me she was leaving here last night and then Adam looking like he was dying I was fed up with her stuff and I didn't want to hear it again! (lack of sleep and serious back pain can do that) We 3 are a family and I couldn't have handled it all without her being there. > > Here's hoping Adam stays well. > > Debby > > > > >

Guest guest
Hi Debby. I am so sorry you all had o go through such a horrible time. I remember too clearly how Joe and I felt when Janelle's temp kept soaring up to 108 in January. She turned out to be septic with two hospital resistant strains of bacteria. I sure am glad that Adam is feeling better and that he did not have a seizure. My prayers are out there for you and please keep an eye on him. 108 is such a high fever. I do not want to alarm but sometimes, as with Janelle, the repercussions did not show up until a couple days later. I pray he continues to improve. > > Reply-To: RSS-Support > Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 23:38:58 -0400 > To: RSS-Support > > Cc: MAGIC_list > > Subject: can it get worse? > > Last night I listed to Jodi, tongue in cheek, my woes and trials and > tribulations. > Boy did I not see what was to happen a couple of hours later!!! > > Adam has had a fever around 102.6 degrees for a couple of days. Guest guest
Just out of curiosity.....what were the symptoms you noticed with Janelle a couple of days later? Adam is off to his dad's this weekend, and I've been keeping a real eye on him, but it won't be like that with his dad. Let me know so I can try to monitor, long distance. Guest guest
She started to have involuntary movements from tremoring to out right swinging of her arms and kicking of her legs. The doctors generally agreed they were choriaform movements because they came in a " worm like " pattern they you could feel and they could stop them by holding the limb that was moving. Janelle did have a seizure and was intubated to control it. Keep in mind her case was a lot more severe. Your ex also will still want to make sure he does not start saying phrases that do not fit the situation they are in too. I heard some older kids did that too before medical treatment was sought and many parents did not pay too much attention to it until symptoms became more obvious. For some reason if there was a " brain injury " it doesn't always show up right away sometimes it takes a couple days. If a few days pass and he is fine I would feel assured that he did not suffer any negative consequences from the high fever and possibly lack of oxygen to his brain. I do not want to scare you although, I know this information in unsettling to say the least. I just want you to be aware that it could happen and to be ready. > > Reply-To: RSS-Support > Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 16:00:50 -0400 > To: RSS-Support > > Subject: Re: can it get worse? > > > Just out of curiosity.....what were the symptoms you noticed with Janelle a > couple of days later? Guest guest
Thanks a bunch. I am not scared, in fact the opposite, I'd rather know than not know. Unfortunately my first thought was to forward your email to him this evening so he would know what to watch for.....but he would just laugh it off and if Adam DID show anything weird, he wouldn't call on purpose. Before Adam left I told him if he felt funny or strange or anything to call me at home. Not that he would probably recognize it mind you. Well I guess I should get use to the constant worrying, my X husband has informed me he is " going to the next level " (I'm assuming court) to take my daughter away from me. So I'll have to worry 24/7 what mess she is finding herself in. Oh man I am getting to not being able to handle it anymore. But thanks a ton for your info. I'm going to print it out....just in case. Debby can it get worse? > >>> > >>> Last night I listed to Jodi, tongue in cheek, my woes and trials and > >>> tribulations. > >>> Boy did I not see what was to happen a couple of hours later!!! > >>> > >>> Adam has had a fever around 102.6 degrees for a couple of days. Guest guest
Wow, Debby. You and I can have a competition for stress and emergencies. I think you win on the emergency part, though. Adam probably threw up from the rapid rise in his fever. Jenna has done that before. Her temp rose to 106 and she vomited a couple of times, only to have her fever drop down to almost normal. It happened a couple of time, in fact. There must be some sort of biological reaction to the rapid fever and the vomiting somehow makes it go down. I hope that Adam does not have any lasting effects from this. I know Janelle has had some complications, but she is so much younger than Adam. Hopefully his age will work for him. As for the stress, I think you better do what I have done - get yourself to the doctor and get some medical intervention. I reluctantly did that, but it has changed my life around. It took about a week for my body to normalize where I was not a zombie in the morning, but I am very happy to say that it is working. You need a break, my friend, and a pharmatalogical intervention may help. I hope that Adam stays better and that you get the rest you need. You've got a lot of us praying for you. I hope it helps. Guest guest
Oh, Debby, just let him " go to the next level. " There is no reason for Colette to be in his legal custody over you. At least here in the US, the courts are more in favor of the child being with the mother unless there is proof that she is not looking out for his/her safety and well-being. No one can say that about you. Again, and I know I said this yesterday but you've had other things going on in you life, you need to make Colette tow the line and let her know she is not going to be allowed to go through with this. She is going to push you and push you, but you cannot give in. Do you think it would help if she spent an extended period with her father just to see what it would be like? Perhaps she could stay with him for the month of July or something. She may change her mind after that. Please do not feel threatened by this man. You are a good and caring and nurturing mom. There is no reason for any change in custody. A child Colette's age should not have a say in where she lives. She is not old enough to make that decision. Gosh, I remember being 16 years old and wanting to change my last name to that of my " step- father's " (who I considered to be my real father) and the court would not even let me do that. They made me wait until I turned 18. They should do that for Colette, too. Jodi
