Guest guest
, we did not need much more in supplies for the DBB other than socks with the grippers on the bottom. We have not had any issues with sores, blisters etc so I don't know much there. As for the time in the shoes, I think several of us have been given different advice on our older children. My Kelsey went into the DBB at 12 months old, was already beginning to walk, and we were still told by our ortho and Dr. Ponseti that she would have to wear them still for 23 hours a day for the full three months. Other have also been told a shorter period of time for their older children but mine still has the full time so I feel this must differ with each Doctor for each child. Good luck with the DBB. He also stands, but isn't walking yet and we were told 23/7 for two months. I know others have said Dr. Ponseti recommends 3 months, but when I asked him he thought our Dr. said 2 months because of 's age. I would get some moleskin from the drug store. You can cut small pieces to cushion any red spots on their feet so they don't turn into sores. Good luck! and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet dbb 23/
Guest guest
Hi and congrats on getting past the casting stage! If you haven't yet, check out the tips and tricks post I send to the lists periodically. As far as supplies, other than socks you might want to get some pipe foam and that cloth athletic tape to pad the bar, especially since he's older you'll want a little protection lol! (for your furniture, floors and self!). Moleskin is also a good thing to have around, and I love the DuoDerm for sores although let's hope there aren't any to put DuoDerm on in the first place! As far as the recommendation of 1-4 weeks 23/7... I would think that 1w would be FAR too little time 23/7 to do any good. It seems that this full time period of DBB wear is essential in keeping these feet corrected, one week IMO would be about useless. 4w perhaps would be enough, but I would want to consult with Dr. Ponseti about this if it were me. I would think that 2mo would be about minimum but I am not sure about that. I also would ask Dr. P. about what times you should reduce to after the full time wear because many docs are reducing to 10-12hr right off the bat and my personal feeling is this is way too soon to be reduced that much. There's got to be a reason Dr. Ponseti schedules babies for 18 hours first, then 16, then 14, and finally 12 after about a year of wear. So ask him what he would recommend, at least that way you will know what you *should* be doing. Bracing for whatever times you like is easy enough, it's not like the doc is there spying on you. Parents are able to brace less than recommended, so you can brace more if you desire ~} Now is the time to do it though because they only get older and bigger... and it's much harder to add hours later than it is to add them now. Oh, and another thing about the 1-4w full time wear... at this age it takes a little time to form habits. And for effective bracing, it needs to be a habit or the child will learn that you take them off when he whines. So the full time wear serves multiple purposes, one being the formation of the habit so the child accepts that he must wear the brace when mama tells him so. I hope it goes smoothly for you but remember, we're here to help if you need it so don't be afraid to ask whatever you need on the lists. :~} Kori At 10:23 AM 12/19/2004, you wrote: >Hi, >My DS will be out of his casts and getting his shoes/DBB on the >23rd.
