Migrant Health Promotion is currently accepting applicants for 2001

summer interns in their Progreso, Texas office to assist with REACH

program development, implementation, and evaluation. Interns should

have at least one year of masters level training in public health,

health education, community development, or similiar area. Recent

masters graduates are also encouraged to apply. Two years of public

health or related work experience and Spanish/English bilingual is

strongly preferred. In addition, familiarity with Promotoras

(Community Health Workers), Popular Education, Type 2 Diabetes and

other chronic diseases, Mexican and Mexican American communities, and

a commitment to social justice are preferred.

Migrant Health Promotion is a national nonprofit agency with offices

in Michigan and Texas, committed to strengthening the capacity of

farmworker families and their communities to improve their health and

well-being through collaborative peer education and advocacy. The

REACH Promotora Community Coalition, led by Migrant Health Promotion,

is a group of community-based organizations working to reduce

diabetes and its complications among persons of Mexican descent in

the Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Coalition is one of 26 nationally

funded by the CDC as part of the Phase II REACH 2010 initiative to

eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities.

Potential projects include diabetes curriculum development for

Promotoras (community health workers), database setup and data

collection, program evaluation and quality assurance, literature

reviews, report and grant writing, and media campaigns.

The Texas Rio Grande Valley is located in the southernmost tip of

Texas, bordering the Mexican states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon.

The Valley is home to three major cities, Mc, Harlingen, and

Brownsville and many other small towns and rural countryside. It is

located about 250 miles south of San and is the home of South

Padre Island, a popular beach resort.

Migrant Health Promotion is offering a stipend of $9/hour plus $1000

living and relocation stipend for the12-wk internship. Please submit
