It sounds like those folks are a bit nutty to me- what child's foot

grows so fast in the first year that they need a new pair every

month?! I would guess that a child may need 5-7 pair *total* over

the course of the 3-4 years that they're in the shoes. Typically,

they'll give you shoes that are larger so that the child can grow

into them and you don't have to buy a pair in every size as the child

grows. You may need the shoes to fit really well in the very

beginning when the foot is so small and " ball-like " , but once the

foot shape develops and the child is walking, there's no reason why

you wouldn't be able to use a bigger shoe. I think in the first

year, depending on how young the child is when they first go into the

shoes, you'd just need 2-3 pairs.

Just my opinion-

Kelsey wears the Markell shoes and when she first got a pair at the end

of August, they were fitted to be a little large. Two weeks ago when

she really started wearing them, the same pair still fit. The orthotic

person felt that we may still be able to make it with the same pair for

a while still and Kelsey has grown quite a bit in that time in all other

ways. Perhaps the once a month estimate was a sales pitch or they have

completely different experience than we have had.

I thought it seemed a little far fetched to get new shoes every

month. Luckily we didn't stick around to find out. LOL Thanks for

your opinion.

I get about 3 mo's out of every half size. Not enough. So I will not ever

get a half size larger again. Only whole sizes up for us from now on. And

we don't even pay for them (Shriners). It's too much of a hassle to get

new shoes every 3mo's. I can't imagine why you'd need a new pair every

month. The toes should be about at the edge or behind the leather where

the open toes are (does that make sense?) and then they can be worn till

the toes are well over/past the edge of the soles. Darbi's feet grow

rather fast, and she's got big ones too as compared to most CF

children. So 6mo's would be minimum to wear one size I would think. I

don't let her toes go much past the edge though, mostly because I don't

like the dirty marks the floors make on her socks on her non CF which is

not rotated out as much as the CF and it rubs on my floors. Which aren't

always as clean as I'd prefer them to be... I don't know if I'd *deal*

with that if I had to pay for the shoes, but since we don't... I ask for

new shoes when her toes get to the edge and it takes a few weeks to get

them at that point anyway.

I do have a pair of hardly worn 2-1/2's to offer up. No bar, but these

were one of the pairs she only wore for 3mo's so they're practically

new. I will send them to someone who needs them, who has to pay outright

for them (insurance doesn't pay, no insurance, etc.). Just send me

shipping costs and they're yours. It costs about $6 to send shoes alone

all the way across the country parcel post.

If you need them, let me know. When you're done, if they're still in good

shape offer them up to someone else please!

Kai has been in the same pair of s since last April. His feet dont grow

very fast and made the shoes with a good amount of spac to grow. I am sure

they havent lasted quite that long for others.

Kori, If these are size 2 1/2 Markells then I will definitely take

them. Kelsey is in a 2 now and if it will get us through any longer

without having to buy another pair then that would be great. our

insurance does not pay for them and the pair we have cost us $85.00. If

you can email me your address, then I will be happy to send the shipping

money.

Thanks, Jenni

This is a wonderful thing that you do Kori!! It always astounds me though that

people have shoes that are actually worth giving away! Lol

Livie's shoes by the time we get new ones are barely hanging on her feet! She

didn't go into the brace until six months old and was crawling shortly after

that so she has always been tuff on the shoes. When we were seeing the doc at

the Shriners Hospital they never offered to give us her old shoes and I never

felt right about asking for them since they paid for them in the first place.

All the ones that we've gotten in Iowa though they always give us back the old

ones. I have a pair of size 2, I believe, that I would be embarrassed to

actually give to anybody!

Her last pair was a size 5N and I would love to send them off to somebody, but

they are NOT pretty! LOL!!

Good for you for doing this wonderful thing that you do!!

A pair a month haha no wonder you were a bit worried, that would

break the bank! Our daughter has been in her Markell's for 3 months

and we will try to stretch it out at least another months before she

gets her 2nd pair. She has had quite the growth spurts (41/2 mos and

almost 20 pds). We will probably go up 2 sizes for her next pair and

hopefully that will get her to the year mark.

Ah shucks... It's so not a big deal. I'm amazed that I actually manage to

ship them out of here... usually I'm the one to drop the ball on stuff

like that.

Like I need these shoes lying around all over lol... I've never thought

about handing over her old shoes to them... A lot of times I just go there

and pick them up. They don't do anything other than order them for me (and

slit the tongue keeper and punch an extra hole in the tip of the straps) so

I've actually been able to go up there a few times without Darbi (she's

sleeping at home with daddy or whatever) and just get the new shoes. Also,

since Angel gave us Kai's Fillauer adjustable bar we haven't needed a new

bar in a long time either. The orthotist is really nice, and trusts me to

put the shoes on properly, in fact he thinks I'm a bit of a zealot which

helps with that trust lol.

I'd rather offer them to people here than let them sit around. And I know

Shriners doesn't give used shoes to their patients so I have no idea what

they'd do with them anyway. We've been pretty lucky with the shoes, they

get a little dirty from the floors, and the left one which is set at

40degrees has more wear on the sole from crawling but other than that

they're in good shape. Also, having experienced the *wait for 2.5 mo's for

shoes because they forgot to order them* deal which meant the half size

larger was nearly too small by the time we even got them leaves the shoes

almost pristine and she's just in them at night. These 4's though will be

a little more worn but I can see her needing new ones in about 3

months. So that'll be about 6mo's which is reasonable I think.

I thought about being greedy and just getting half sizes each time so I

could offer more shoes to people here lol... but that's not a good idea

for multiple reasons... Oh well... I will do what I can while I can. I

just hope that when we go in to see Dr. Sussman in January that he doesn't

insist that she can discard the brace when she's 2, or even 2.5 because if

he's dead set on that our days at Shriners are over. They make you sign

something that says you have to follow the advice/treatment plan of their

docs or you don't get care. I'd love for her to continue to be seen at

Shriners till she's 18 because it sure will help. Additionally, I don't

expect that she'll need much care after her days in the DBB... I expect

her foot to be perfect forever!!
