Guest guest
How old is your son? Our pediatrician hasn't started on juice yet (he'll be 8-months on Thanksgiving), but told us when he was four months old that we could give him some pear juice if and only if he was constipated. We did that once....gave him 2 ounces the one day and when there was nothing the next day, gave him another 2 ounces. He then had one later that second day. Of coure, you probably should check with your pediatrician's office first to see what they recommend for his age. Are you talking about lifting his legs with the bar so his bottom comes up enough to slip a diaper under? I'ved used the bar to hold his legs up, but our doc told us he didn't recommend using the bar to actually lift the legs up to put the diaper under him. I guess because it can cause the heels to slip up when you're pulling on the shoes. Glad to hear that he did get some sleep and had no sores or anything this morning. : ) On another note: Be careful with allowing him to spend a lot of time in things like swings and bouncy chairs. My son loved his swing and bouncy chair and spent a lot of time in them....too much actually because I didn't know he shouldn't. He ended up with the back of his head being significantly flattened. Once side was a bit worse than the other because he was always looking in the same direction towards the TV or me. He almost ended up needing to wear a band to round out his head over several months, but luckily, the neurologist thought it was mild to moderate and would round itself out over time. His head is coming along just fine. It'll be a little while yet before it's pretty much back to normal, but it is quite improved. I was just happy that we found out about it before it got any worse. and BCF 03/25/2004 On 11/20/2004 9:01:58 AM, nosurgery4clubfoot wrote: > It was a long night, but we made it. Guest guest
Nate is 10 weeks old. Our pediatrician told us to put karo syrup in his bottles to help regulate him. It usually takes the 3rd day for it to work. I'm glad you said that about the head. He does spend a lot of time in a bouncy seat and swing (he really likes it). Then again, as a 10 week old what are your other options besides a blanket? He does turn his head to the right more so than the left and the dr already said something to us. We are supposed to prop a blanket under that side to force him to look the other way. I do that during the day, but at night I'm afraid he will suffocate himself. Am I being paranoid? But seriously, if they aren't in the bouncy seat and swings, I'm holding him. What are the other options? > > It was a long night, but we made it. Guest guest
The only other option is to put him on his tummy when you are there to keep an eye on him. He probably won't like it at first, but eventually he'll get used to it. Also, I'm not sure, but it might be better for him to be on his back on the floor rather than at an incline. I know I was told that when they're at an incline, like when in a swing or bouncy chair, it forces their chin to their chest and it tightens up those muslces. had a red crease on his neck from that. Once he was kept out of those and able to move his head more freely (and I acutally worked with him to stretch those muscles back out) the red eventually went away and his neck mucles aren't tight anymore. Now that he's able to roll both ways, he usually sleeps on his tummy at night. I would NOT recommend that Nate sleep like that yet though...not until he's putting himself that way. They say that once they're able to roll both ways, they're strong enough to lift their head and/or roll if necessary and you don't have to put them on their back. The first couple of times I found sleeping on his tummy, I did put him on his back again, but he just rolled right back over again. As far as the rolled up blanket, I've read that you shouldn't do that because it makes it easier for them to unintentionally end up on their tummys because they're already half way there when propped up, so maybe don't do it at night, just during the day when you can keep an eye on him. I remember some of the nurses doing this with my son in the hospital, but he was also in those little bassinets. If Nate was sleeping in a cradle, it would probably be okay since he most likely couldn't get on his tummy anyway because there probably wouldn't be enough room. But a crib has plenty of room. I certainly don't want to second guess your doctor, but in my opinion, if you're worried about it, don't do it at night because you'll be constantly worried and checking on him and won't get any sleep yourself, and you need to get your sleep. His head will probably be just fine if you do the propping thing during the day while you're watching him, let him have tummy time several times throughout the day, and limit his time in the swings and bouncy chairs. Once we found out we needed to watch his head, I actully got a big pillow from our bed and let him nap on that during the day, as long as I was with him. He still takes his 20-30 minute catnaps on that during the day (only takes 1 in the morning now). I NEVER leave him alone with it. My thoughts were that it was a softer surface, and therefore not putting as much pressure on his head. It's not really fluffy or anything, but it's enough to not be a firm surface. Okay, this is turning into a book, so I guess it's time for me to shut-up now. : ) and BCF 03/25/2004 On 11/20/2004 10:12:15 AM, nosurgery4clubfoot wrote: > Nate is 10 weeks old. Guest guest
Don't worry about it being a book, I really do appreciate the advice. I've just started tummy time with Nate, but it really has been a chore. He can't stand it!!! I can only tolerate the screaming for so long. Usually, I only leave him on his tummy for a couple of minutes. I've really tried to use his playmat more since he likes being on his back. Then I can prop him up so that he turns the other way. He can usually tolerate that for about 5-10 minutes assuming he is not tired and cranky. I like the idea of the pillow. I have a feeling he'll like taking little catnaps on that. He's all about being snuggly. He would sleep on me every night if I let him. Believe it or not, but last night was the first time we've ever done that. I'm always afraid I'll drop him in my sleep, but I found a way to prop us both up so it wasn't possible. I know I shouldn't let him sleep in the swing, but last night was the first time he had done that in over a week and it had been at least a week or so before that. I only cave in under desperate situations and last night was declared desperate. The week before I had a breast infection and just couldn't listen to him scream anymore so that was declared desperate. Now I'm afraid to let him cry himself to sleep anymore. I'm giving him a couple of days of being completely coddled before I go back to strict mommy. I feel like he deserves at least that. Thanks again for listening to me babble. I really need support right now. > > Nate is 10 weeks old. Our pediatrician told us to put karo syrup in > > his bottles to help regulate him. Guest guest
We were told karo syrup as well as well as a bit of oatmeal cereal in the bottle. We sure didn't have to wait 3 days, more like 30 minutes!! Day 7?? oiy! We were told to do those two items if he went two days without pooping! Don't worry about the being too gentle with the bar, my older son (3) loves pulling my younger son (1) by the bar, and younger son just loves it. I have learned to love changing diapers with the bar, you just yank on it, and his legs come right up for you!! hehe! I don't know what I'm going to do when the shoes come off, I guess wrestle with a squirmy toddler...can't wait for that either...hehe! 10-09-03 atypical bl cf mitchells 23/7 > > > It was a long night, but we made it. Guest guest
With it being so early in your DBB phase I would be careful about using the bar even though all of us here do it, but while there's still that initial stage of risk that the shoes might slip I'd be careful about pulling on them too much. Once he's a little bigger I'd say no problem, but sometimes it's hard to keep the shoes from slipping on these little bitty guys. Guest guest
I'll get rotten tomatoes thrown at me for this, but what's so wrong with holding him? But realistically speaking, yes I realize it makes for a long day and complicates doing your chores during the day. I used a sling a lot and there are other creative measures....like when I carried a basket of laundry to the machine, he would ride in the basket, then lay on the floor while I loaded the machine, then ride in the basket of clean stuff I took out of the dryer. He liked propped up in the corner of the sofa with a pillow under his knees to keep him from scooching down. I even learned how to chop onions one handed.....but really try to find yourself some type of sling carrier. He can sit up, sleep, snuggle with you during the day while you go about your business. It not only prevents the flat head but it exposes baby to many sensory experiences he misses out on confined to a swing - he gets to see, hear, smell, touch, smell things all day long which is proven to enhance over all intellegence. I've read there is a potential risk involved with the Snuggli type carriers where a baby sits with his legs hanging out because it's not natural to have all your weight supported by the spine/pelvic area in this fashion. There's a name for the condition it can cause but I can't remember it right now. s. But seriously, if they aren't in the bouncy seat and swings, I'm holding him. What are the other options? Guest guest
We have used a backpack with our fourth child and it has been a lifesaver for him and for us. He is now 15 months old and he still loves it. Especially at the end of the day when he is sooo tired but not quite ready for bed. With four children I don't have the luxury to hold him all the time and the backpack let's him be close but leaves my hands free. I find it's even better than a stroller in stores with the bonus of him not climbing out of the basket. It's important to get a good one and be sure it has a hip belt to take the weight off your back. Also be sure to get one (and use) the shoulder straps. My guy is a climber and when I didn't use the straps and he started to climb out there was hardly any way to reach back there and grab him in time. We put the backpack in the top five of things every parent needs! > I'll get rotten tomatoes thrown at me for this, but what's so wrong with holding him? There's 5 years between mine. was so anxious to get the baby, then so disappointed to realize (despite nine months of me telling him so) to realize the baby was just this little blob who couldn't do anything for the first few months. Together, I am in for gray hairs a lot sooner than I anticipated...thank God for color in a box! hehe. 5 years between!!! Wow! At least one's out of diapers though and hopefully is a bit of help. is just now getting helpful, potty training is a whole other dilema!! Thanks for keeping the secret...it's funny, I had so many great ideas on how to raise my kids and so many things I would do and wouldn't do...and then I had them!!! At least the two are talking and in agreement. Does it ever end?? I've heard rumors that one day this will be behind us, but right now...they are just rumors! nosurgery4clubfoot , " Number23 " wrote: > I'll keep you secret, I swear! How far apart are your boys? Guest guest
Ya, my two give me plenty of gray hairs and heart attacks. Tonight it was the milk crate. Big brother pushing little brother in the crate a hundred miles per hour. Aahhhh! But the look on Evertt's face was too much, I couldn't stop them the baby was having so much fun and if they're willijng to play together......well, hey, I gotta let them. s. Re: long night They are about 2 years apart. is 3 and is 1. Man!! seems to be trouble and loves finding trouble. Those went out the window pretty quickly! :)They sure do have fun together though. Guest guest
Gosh, I'm so relieved to read this commentary. We're going through the exact same thing with Aidan. I role a burp cloth, turn his head to the left and stick the burp cloth behind it. He get's mad at first but then get's used to it. We're working on flatnening the back of his head so maybe the swing will help a little, he loves his swing. He was a preemie so the sides of his head are a little flattenened from laying on his side to help with reflux. We're also currently constipated, AGAIN!!! We're going on day 3. I did use the kyro (dark) syrup the first time and on the 3rd day, OH MY STARS, every single one of his toes must have been full. I've never seen so much poo in my life. He literally filled up his diaper, the bottom of the swing seat, and let's just say his casts are no longer white!!!!!!!!! mfolkemer_1999 mlfsmith@...> wrote: Nate is 10 weeks old.
