Guest guest
Hi Judith, I'm sorry your twins are sick. We just got over it here. What I usually do when Colin is sick is give him pedialyte mixed with his pediasure at night and turn the volume down (from 60 to 50). When he gets a cough it always causes vomiting for him. Usually within a couple of days we are back to his normal intake. And I always give him a night time cough medicine which seems to help somewhat. Hope everyone is feeling better soon! Guest guest
Judith As you know we have been having problems with FInlay and his toleration of feeds. What works for us is feeding him gastrolyte only for 24hours then gradually adding pediasure, increasing the ratio of pedaisure to gastrolyte gradually over a couple of days. may tolerate 50/50 pediasure /gastrolyte immediatly and then you can increase from there. That way you are able to keep him hydrated without causing him to gag. We also add glucose to this formula for FInlay - b/c of his hypo - g issues - glucose is added at 5mg per kg per minute and we have also added cornstarch in the past - that is added at 1g per kg per 4hours. Hopefully you will be able to see Dr H soon - I'm sure she will have the answer! Good Luck - totally understand the worry this can cause Let us know how you get on - with Finlays issues re toleration of feeds - I will be very interested to learn Dr H's suggestions for > has a gtube). Guest guest
Judith, You should put in an emergency call to Dr. H. Don't count on her calling back. She is leaving for Hawaii on Friday, so you need to get to her ASAP. Do not wait. She will not be happy if you do. I'll bet she wants in the hospital for gut rest and IV fluids. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who responded. Steve spoke with Dr H on Wednesday before I got home from work. Since he didn't know how much weight lost, he couldn't tell Dr H. We agreed on 50/50 peptamen jr and pedialyte for last night and kept him on full formula for today. We are making up calories by not taking him off his pump as much for meals today since he just doesn't feel like eating anyway. He is seeming much more like himself today. Dr H did tell Steve that she was going away for 3 weeks and to speak with the fellows or Dr Spigland (surgeon) if we had any problems. Took a trip to the pediatrician today - Becca was due for a well child visit and to get checked out. turns out has an ear infection as well, so we are starting antibiotics. Hopefully by keeping him on his pump a little more than usual for the next week or so, he will gain back some of the weight he lost.
