Guest guest
le: Getting meds down Alyssa has always been difficult, but this has worked for us. (this is how I gave meds to kids in the hospital) You can now buy syringes at the pharmacy without needles. Get a 5cc syringe and draw the med up into the syringe. Most things come in liquid form or can be crushed and dissolved. Squirt the medicine just inside the cheek between the gums and cheek. It ususally by passed the gag reflex and is swallowed like and with saliva. I hope this works for you. Donna, grandmother to Alyssa problems swallowing meds I need some help again. All my kids have always taken their meds perfectly. Coby always has as well. However, last week Coby had to start taking Zantac again. He couldn't get it swallowed without throwing it back up and then he would have horriable screaming episodes. Well, they switched him to pepcid but it is back ordered from the company so he hasn't started it yet. Yesterday he was put on amoxicillin for a slight ear infection and he took the med ok yesterday. Now this morning I can't get it down him. I used some salin drops to clean his nose this morning and he threw up all his bottle that he had ate like 3 hours earlier. Now I tried to use a dropper with his med and when he tries to swallow it he chokes on it and then throws it up I tried putting some of it all the way at the back of his throat and it still didn't help. So, I got a nipple and put the med in the nipple so he could suck on it. He choked on it and then it came out of his nose. I'm so frustrated and I just don't understand. What am I missing here. le, mom to: ShyeLynn 8, Brock 6, and Coby (rss) & Carlee 4 months
Guest guest
Is he showing symptoms of any illness? The only time we ever had those kind of vomiting issues with Jack, he had rotavirus. -Lindsey, Mom to Jack (RSS?/SGA) and Joe, 14 mo old
Guest guest
No signs of any illness except his ears are a little red, but he has no fever, or any other symptoms to mention. I have a seringe and it didn't help. He still gags on it. I'm at my wits end. Thanks le > Is he showing symptoms of any illness? Guest guest
I know how frustrating it can be when our kids won't take what they need. Alyssa had an ear infection and she wouldn't eat or drink or take her meds and gagged when I gave it to her. Finally, I just gave it a rest for about 2 hours. Then I put the Amoxicillan (sp?) in with about a half ounce of formula. After she got the medicine down, I had another bottle waiting if she would take more. We did lose a few meals here and there that week, but she got the medicine she needed to get better faster. Good Luck! Dayna, Mom to Alyssa problems swallowing meds > I need some help again. Guest guest
I finally got the 4ml down him by the method you suggested. It took about 20 mins and stayed down about 30 seconds. Then it all came back up. I think that something else maybe going on as well. I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor. I'm stumped. Thanks for your thoughts and idea's. le > I know how frustrating it can be when our kids won't take what they need. > Alyssa had an ear infection and she wouldn't eat or drink or take her meds > and gagged when I gave it to her. Guest guest
My non RSS daughter was like that. She tossed every single med back at me. I ended up getting a syringe type of device from the pharmacy (specially for kids and meds) and slowly squirted it at the side of her mouth very slowly!!!! Otherwise, when she was real not going to take the med (usually tempra)......I went with suppositories (sp??). The other thing to consider, is calling the pharmacy and ask if this particular med can be mixed with juice. I hated to do that because I panicked if one single drop was left over, but when all else failed I did that. Adam, my RSS son, still cannot take a pill form. When we did the Ritalin double blind test, I use to crush it and put it on a spoon with apple sauce (I checked with the pharmacy first)> Actually my 13 year old (non RSS) was sick last week and I gave her a regular pill of tylenol (she's over 130 lbs!!!) and didn't she gag that back up!! I had to cut it all up in small pieces. She never had any type of medical problem......same with Adam. She just hates medicine.
