Guest guest
I know every child is different, but I was just curious for those that have a 6 year old how much they weigh. weighed 31 lbs. last July at the Magic Convention (was told he weighed too much by Dr. H..ha! ha!). Well, after stopping all tube feedings cold turkey, he lost 2 lbs. to 29 lbs. as expected by Dr. H and other 's G.I. doctor. Well, in December, was hit hard with getting Strep Throat twice and he didn't eat well that whole month. So he is now 27 lbs. and has been that steadily. As usual, I worry about if he's too low in weight or if other 6 yr. olds weigh around 27 lbs.???? I have to admit one thing (and is going to KILL me), but we stopped giving Periactin 3 mos. ago because we didn't see it working (I know, , you did that once too). Then it dawned on me yesterday that hasn't been eating well for the past two months and that's when the light bulb went on over my head that his decline in eating MAY have to do with stopping Periactin (as well as being sick). So, needless to say, we are now back on Periactin again and hopefully realize that it was working more than we thought. 's GH was increased last week and today for the past two days has seemed a lot thirstier and hungrier so PRAY that the GH and Periactin will start kicking in!!!!! Thanks for letting me know what your 6 yr. old or former 6 yr. old weighs or weighed. Stacie
Guest guest
- I laughed when I read you stopped the Periactin. But remember what I said when we did it - the only way we learn is through experience. When we stopped, did still eat some, and was gaining a bit, but it wasn't until I charted it at Dr. H's that I realized just how far off the curve she had fallen. at 27 lbs is probably too low. I don't have a boy's chart in front of me, and you didn't write his height. You can always go to the www.cdc.gov growth charts, for weight for height, and chart him. Clearly, the strep and two cases of it, would get any child's weight down. But I think that the combo of that with the lack of Periactin makes it suspicious that you are probably correct in restarting the Periactin. just turned 7, and HATED starting the Periactin again after her surgery. So we switched to, drum roll, PILLS!!!! She took her 1/2 tablet and swallowed it with water no problem! Now, because she is on TPN for 20 hours a day (like a g-tube in that it is continuous feed just through a central vein not the stomach) she isn't hungry much during the day. But tonight, while lying in bed about 2 hours after taking the Periactin, she said she was hungry. YAHOO!!!! So I am going to start the Periactin earlier in the night. Speaking from experience, once your kid is on Periactin for while, it may not seem like they are eating that much more, but either we have forgotten how little they ate before, or the periactin somehow converts the calories more. I don't know the answer. I just know gains more weight on it than off of it. Will you email me privately with updates on ? 's health is stablizing a bit, and I am trying to get caught up with emails... > > I know every child is different, but I was just curious for those that > have a 6 year old how much they weigh. weighed 31 lbs. last July > at the Magic Convention (was told he weighed too much by Dr. H..ha! > ha!). > > Well, after stopping all tube feedings cold turkey, he lost 2 lbs. to > 29 lbs. as expected by Dr. H and other 's G.I. doctor. Guest guest
STacie, My son Matt is 6 years old (birthday last October) and he weighs 32 pounds. He hasn't been diagnosed RSS, but we are leaning that way. I, too, tried Periactin but stopped. For me it was a behavior thing. He was eating much better, but his crying, angry, tempermental behavior was too much. We currently have company, but as soon as they leave we are going to try it again. My pediatrician wants me to start a lose dose in the evenings to see if that helps at all. Hang in there! Guest guest
Hi Beth, Do you still have the dosage schedule that Ken sent you for the periactin? If not, I have a copy here and would be glad to send it to you again. I kept it for when brandon goes on the periactin, which I am sure will happen some time in the future! LOL Pat (g-ma to , RSS, 13 months, 11# 4oz, 24.75 " , GT)
Guest guest
Pat, Yep, we have it. I am going to start again, just working up the nerve. I just really don't need any more " behavior " problems on top of the normal, active boy problems I already have. I am just taking a break........... BTW - how is doing these days? Guest guest
Just wanted to comment on the similarites. My son, Matt, weighed about 32 pounds at 6 years. We put him on Depakote for ADHD, wild, crazy, screaming behavior. The purpose was to stabilize his mood. The neuro did not want to put him on Ritalin or Adderall because he was afraid it would kill whatever appetite he had. It helped alot for about 8 months and then the crazy behavior started again. He gained over 20 pounds on it in 1 year!!!!!. He started to look really chubby. He was non-stop eating. We accidentally missed a few days and his behavior changed so dramatically for the better, that we have not put him back on. He is now about 45 pounds and looks great and acts great! He definitely is not eating as well, but his weight loss seems to have stopped. His behavior seems to be directly related to how well he eats that day. If he is hungry and blood sugar is down, he can get crabby and loud. Otherwise, it is a miracle, he is so well behaved. It is a joy taking him out. One year ago, my husband and I decided it just wasn't worth the aggravation of taking him out. We have two older sons with ADHD and it was just too much to handle. They were all horrible. He has been off the Depakote since October and starting to make strides in school also. Anyway, just thought I would add my 2 cents. Judy, Mom to 7, about 43 inches and 45 pounds. Guest guest
Hi , That is great that the pills actually do stimulate the appetite like the liquid! When Charissa was on the trial study on Periactin in the late 1980's we were told that only the liquid had that side effect..... in Alaska > just turned 7, and HATED starting the Periactin again after > her surgery.
