Guest guest Posted February 5, 2004 Report Share Posted February 5, 2004 I got migraines all through my last pregnancy and took tylenol with codeine and it helped so much cause I would just go to sleep. Now I have a 4 year olds and migraines....I usually will drink a strong cup of coffee and pop 2 tylenol. I always have to wear sunglasses because sunlight triggers my migraines. Migraines Is anyone else having awful headaches? I take Vicoden for my migraines but obviously not now. They were never really that bad. But last night I got one-think it was because I went shopping and got very tired and winded. Came home and felt like crap. Went to bed with the headache, and lo and behold woke up this morning with it! I never wake up with it. I always have gotten rid of it by sleeping. Guest guest Posted February 5, 2004 Report Share Posted February 5, 2004 Tricia, Its been a while since I posted since my computer is on the blink again but I thought I could maybe help a bit while the computer is up and running. Of course before taking anything you need to speak to your OB but I will share with you what I have learned with research and from my OB. I have severe arthritis and fibromyalgia and before I became pregnant (29 weeks now) I was on some pretty hefty doses of pain meds daily so I can walk and do the things I need to do and keep my pain at a tolerable level and part of my daily pain meds were hydrocodone (a.k.a. vicoden) in the 5/500 dose. When I found out I was pregnant of course I was scared about my pain meds, about the amount I was taking and how it was going to effect my baby and whether I was going to be bed ridden and in extreme pain throughout my pregnancy. With my OB's blessing I personally made the choice to cut all my doses to the bare minimum, just enough to be able to keep walking and have the ability to make all my DR appointments. I currently take 2 hydrocodone per day and have permission to take a third if I need to. What I have learned is that its not the codeine in the hydrocodone that is dangerous to the baby, its the acetaminophen that you have to be concerned about. The maximum amount of acetaminophen that a person can take per day is 2000mg so you don't want to go over that. There is more concern early in the pregnancy rather than later when you are taking high doses of acetaminophen. Like I said, speak to your OB, but if you need to take one or two vicoden's to get rid of your migraine it should be ok. Axelrod Migraines Is anyone else having awful headaches? Guest guest Posted February 6, 2004 Report Share Posted February 6, 2004 I was getting alot of headaches that I think were from sinuses which they say acts up when pregnant and all I could take was tylenol and nasal spray but it helped some. The best meds we have found to lesson the pain was Tylonol w/ Codine but doc's only recommend using it for a short time. None of the other migraine meds ever helped Asenath. When we met Dr. Whiteman, Asenath was in her 9th week with a migraine. No letting up for over 9 weeks. Can you imagine the pain? It was horrible, and she was only 2 years old. I was desperate for help. Anyway, what helped Asenath was finding out that she had metabolic acidosis and carnitine deficiency. After only 3 days on Carnitor and Poilycitra Asenath's migraine became much better. We could tell she still had some pain, but nothing to the extent she was having. You may want to look into her metabolic stability to see if all is ok there. I hope some doctor takes you serious tomorrow. It is a real pain when docs question you with the all too common question, "How do you know she hurts?" Like we don't know our own children and there VERY obvious hand on the head, owie, my head hurts...isn't enough proof! Asenath still has headaches on a regular basis and unfortunately they are getting worse again lately. It just seems so horrible knowing that these little ones have to suffer so much. I have always wanted a stronger pain med for her, but nothing has worked and I think the docs just gave up trying to find something that would. They just assume it's something she has to live with due to the vasculitis and Mito she has. Keep pressing the docs for help. Hopefully the pain will lesson and stop soon for her. Keep us posted, and sorry for my rambling. Darla: mommy to Asenath (3), Zipporrah (3 mon.) and the other 7 kids ages 15-2 yrs. WE ARE OFF TO MAYO AGAIN TOMORROW!!! HOPEFULLY LAST TRIP FOR 3 MONTHS! migraines Hello all, I don't get to post much but I have a question. My daughter Shelby was holding her head and crying all day saying her head hurt. She also stayed in bed all day and was very lethargic I was wondering if she could possibly be getting migraines. I was going to take her to the emergency room but the none of her drs were on call and the ones taking call would not help there reply was we don't know what to do with her don't know about her disease. The neuro on call said he wouldn't even see her or order any labs or tests. The emergency room where I live would have done nothing without a dr to tell them how to treat her. So I am hoping we can get through the night until her drs will be in. Will they do anything for migraines in little ones ?Shelby is only two and I hated to see her suffer in pain but nobody today would do anything. I hope all is well with everyone. Guest guest Posted February 9, 2004 Report Share Posted February 9, 2004 HI , my oldest son not mito affect suffered from severe migrains starting at age 5, we took him to St. s hospital in Phila. and he saw Dr. Legido (who is also my youngest son Matts mito neurologist) a wonderful Dr. He did MRI's and lots of blood test, allergy test, and we found out that msg's , and color dyes were triggers, we also found out my sons veins and arteries were quite small and that was causing the migrains to be so severe. Dr. Legido put my son on INDERAL (this is a blood pressure medication), and from the 1st dose, my son got relief, he was suffering ever day with migrains and with the inderal it went from everyday to one migrain per month. There is a documentry in the medical libary at ST. Chris HOsp for children and also a copy on Action News archives, with my son and Dr. Legido, intervewed by Antia Brickman (health watch) this was also aired on the news in 1993. THe piece done was on migrains in children and adults. So if all other meds fail, maybe you can ask your doc to try Inderal or to contact dr. Legido who is an expert on childrens migrains.
