Well I just got Claytons first report card since we have moved to Virginia (Fairfax County to be exact) and he is in a self-contained special ed class with 2 special ed teachers, an aide for the classroom and 7 students. He is technically in first grade - but learning at his own pace. They do go into the regular ed class for science and social studies (yes they now teach those in 1st grade). Well he gets a regular report card and then we also get a copy of his IEP goals and his progress on those.

I find it interesting that they gave him a S in language arts - but then note that "he has not met grade level expectations in language arts and mathematics as defined in the Progam of Studies". THis is the confusing part of the law I guess. He gets a regular report card and is supposed to meet the defined goals - but he clearly is unable to? He initially was in a cobined K/1 class but then they divided the class and placed him in the 1st grade part cause he was ahead of the K children and did K last year (I actually wanted both Cole - clay's twin and Clay to repeat K - as they were both premies - but they placed Clay in the 1st grade class and in reality in the self-contained setting it is fine) BUT the problem is he would never function in a regular first grade class and will never meet the grade level expectations. So this is where I get confused. He is making great progress but makes no sense to me why they include that or even expect him to - especially with his IEP.

Cole on the other hand is doing well in a regular full day K - but is in the process of getting an OT evaluation this week. He is making progress and meeting his goals BUT I met with the teacher last week as she was concerned he was not doing as well as he should for someone who repeated K. Well I explained he went 1/2 day K and in afternoon (when tired) and he really was not ready for K. He is also ADD but we do not want to medicate him yet. he does have fine motor delays in addition to being left handed so hopefully they will get him some help.

Jake is in 5th grade and living in NY with his dad. He has an IEP for fine motor skills and do to his significant ADHD and also to allow him more time for tests and so forth. Jake has no problem meeting requirements and exceeding them - as he is also gifted - BUT in his case his behavior and lack of fine motor skills - he still struggles to write and still has not learned cursive (he does have a scribe take notes for him),

Just my thoughts and frustrations. I have no clue what it all means just rattling now.

Love, Sharon - mom to 3 boys jake (10 1/2 - ADHD and mild mito and fine motor delays and GI problems - possible crohns), Cole (almost 7 - NDA - but appears to be ADD) and Clay (almost 7 - mito, GI issues - most likely crohns, dd, pdd, etc.

I just read your post and saw that you are in Fairfax County. We are also here, and I just thought I'd say hello. My son, who is 12 and in 6th grade, has been in Fairfax County Schools for 7 years now, most of the time with good results and occasionally not so good. I hope that it is working out well for you.
