As a vegetarian, I have to be careful to get enough iron and eat alot of

green leafy veg to help my intake. It does not make your poo black in that

kind of quantity

What does make your poo black is taking iron tablets, which you get given

after the birth if your blood loss lowers your iron levels. I had iron

tablets after DS's birth, and had jet black poo for weeks, and it also makes

you a bit constipated...which aint great if you have had a dozen or so

stitches in that area!!

Iron deficiency (anaemia) makes you tired, dizzy, weak and just lethargic in

general. Think its because your red blood cells become less efficient at

picking up oxygen, but cant remember. If you think you might be lacking in

iron, go to the doctor and get a simple blood test. Iron tablets are not

fun, but make you better in the long run. Just drink lots of water, and

avoid pain killers with codine in, and you'll be just fine! :)

Yes and Yes!!

Yes to black poo and yes to tiredness, though there could be something else

causing your tiredness (ie. young child tee hee!) - but if you want to get some

extra iron in you to see if this helps Floradix is excellent - you can get it

from most health food shops and is far better than takeing iron tablets.

Another source is of course dark chocolate or on Homebirth UK it was mentioned

that Guinness also has iron in but you'd need to drink 800 pints a day to get a

therapeutic dose!

Where did I hear that the NHS used to give every new mum a half pint

in the maternity wards? I guess that was for the other vitamins :)

I think that was stout? - but not being much of a drinker not sure if there the

same thing! - and yes I think there are other vitamins in it that give it some

value - what I haven't a clue!

I'm sure I remember my mum saying she was given Guinness after the

birth of my brother (1967), or maybe she was just recommended it?

The Midwife who visited me just after my DS1 was born told my dh to go

out and buy me some stout, brown ale, Guiness or similar. And that

was in 1990!

My Irish local midwife recommended Guinness to me.

She told me it was the Brewers' Yeast which helps your milk production.

Question: has anyone with mito/suspected mito had iron infusions? I understand iron is a toxin to mitochondria given it is an oxidant. We have never given it to my children because they need red cells anyway and so they get their iron in the red cell transfusions. However, my own doc just called. I am anemic and my ferritin (iron stores) are undetectable. They don't want to mess around and want to give iron infusions which concerns me. But being anemic is not a good thing either. My internist knows zilch about mito and I'm not even sure what the alternative is anyway if I don't get the iron. I guess I'm hoping that someone has experience with Fe infusions and can tell me it did not worsen their disease. I have not had a biopsy to prove I have mito but enough soft signs that the mito doc said he does not need to biopsy me to prove it unless I want him to. I don't. Anne
