Guest guest
Question: has anyone with mito/suspected mito had iron infusions? I understand iron is a toxin to mitochondria given it is an oxidant. We have never given it to my children because they need red cells anyway and so they get their iron in the red cell transfusions. However, my own doc just called. I am anemic and my ferritin (iron stores) are undetectable. They don't want to mess around and want to give iron infusions which concerns me. But being anemic is not a good thing either. My internist knows zilch about mito and I'm not even sure what the alternative is anyway if I don't get the iron. I guess I'm hoping that someone has experience with Fe infusions and can tell me it did not worsen their disease. I have not had a biopsy to prove I have mito but enough soft signs that the mito doc said he does not need to biopsy me to prove it unless I want him to. I don't.
