Guest guest Posted March 24, 2006 Report Share Posted March 24, 2006 I think you all know by now that I have a Katrina Rescue Rottweiler for my dog to train as a service dog. Tom and I had cabin fever so we decided to go to Door County again for one day with an over night stay. We took Deuce with us. Deuce likes to travel and does real well traveling. We got to the motel and I checked us in. We brought Deuce in and Tom decided it was time to play. BIG Mistake. Deuce saw this as a sign to play and for him to bark. I never yelled at the dog, but explained things to the BIG KID, Tom. I told tom if he didn't want to keep Deuce, we needed to be quiet. Deuce was a perfect gentleman and even the desk clerk could not believe how well mannered Deuce was while in the room and when he went to the bathroom outside. I got more comppliments on Deuce. I am very well pleased with him and the progress he has made. I printed off a test sheet of which there are seven things he must do in order to pass and become certified. I am working on two of them and so far I am very well pleased. The one is where the dog is on a six foot leash and you go the full six feet, telling the dog to sit and stay. You must do this with every type of commotion you can think of. Our walk takes us to the railroad track and car wash. It seems we always have some type of commotion going on you can imagine, from kids on bikes, people walking by to other people walkin there dogs. One night on our walk a young couple was walking by and I told Deuce to sit and stay which he did. This couple mentioned the fact that Deuce was indeed a purebred Rottweiler, of which I was already informed. They asked me if he would bite and I told them he as much as lick you to death instead of biting. Biting is one thing Tom and I will not tolerate. This couple held their hands down with the back facing Deuce which is the correct way of approaching a strange dog. They no sooner had their hands down that Deuce was licking and begging for a pat on the head. This couple was in shock as how well behaved Deuce was being. We also encountered a lady walking a poddle. Tom and I call them phoo phoo dogs. I made Deuce sit and the whole time, Deuce never barked, whimpered nothing. He passed that part of the test. Then last night we were on Deuce's walk and a teenager went walking by and the whole time I was making Deuce sit and stay while I was 6 feet from him. Deuce did not move or budge from his sitting spot. This means he passed another part of his test. We do not know how much or what knid of training he has had in the past. All we know is he has had some training. Deuce is much fun and a joy to be with. I cannot wait to start working with him while I am in my power chait. We are going to go to Lancaster, Pa for the Parade of Rescue Katrina Rottweilers, because they want to meet the adoptive families and see how well the dogs are getting along with the owners. I have tried so many different ways of trying to train, I think he is hopeless, I think he has downs syndrome, but they don't dx that in dogs . he will lick you to death too, so he's full of love, but just doesn't mind. Guest guest Posted March 25, 2006 Report Share Posted March 25, 2006 I watch the National Feographic Channel on Friday's. I have learned a lot from the Dog Whisperer Ceasar Milan. I have also bought books on dog training and Tom is a big help also. I found out with Deuce when he would poopie in the house, was when he thought the big Sandi Cast dog I bought tom was real and he did both ways right in fron of this statue. The next time he did it was when we were paying what he thought was to much attention to the cat and not him. You have to figure out which animal is dominant, then you have to become alpha. I never let Deuce out of the door first, he is not allowed from his sitting position when I put the food bowl on the floor until I say release. You must be in control at all times.
