Guest guest
It is my understanding that the aminoglycoside antibiotics *only* affect *hearing* in the *very specific MtDNA deletion A1555G*. I am not aware of any articles written, which associate aminoglycosides with mitochondria in muscle tissue. My comment about checking with the doctor regarding topical application was attached to my wondering *if* aminoglycosides could enter the bloodstream through topical application, sufficient for the aminoglycoside to do its ototoxic damage to the very specific group of Mitochondrial patients. As a nurse I'd say ophthalmic gent isn't absorbed systemically and would be OK EXCEPT having a kid with this disorder AND eye muscle problems I'd say ask your mito specialist (you've probably learned already your GP doesn't know squat about mito). Only the specialist knows if the eye drops are absorbed into and affect they mitochondria in the eye muscles. Since this is a commonly prescribed eye drop, I'm interested to hear his/her answer. Please contact mito-owner with any problems or questions.
