We get all of our meds/vitamins from the Mayo pharmacy except for our Topamax and steroids. What I am wondering is if Medicaid will automatically cover the meds from Mayo or if we will have to do something special to get them covered. I really like getting my stuff from Mayo as they are able to ship it to me if I can't pick them up. I am not worried about coverage og meds, but am wondering about the vitamins (COQ10, Carnitine, B2, etc.). I talked to the Kentucky Medicaid people last week about getting CoQ 10

covered for ,I was told the NDC # didn't mean anything to them. They

will only cover meds that they can get a rebate back from the company,

whether it has an NDC # or not.

All 's meds were covered under EPSDT until she turned 21 last month.

That a special part of Medicaid for children under 21.

For those who have children under 21,maybe your state has a semilar program.

Also, my husband talked to our CPA last week,we were told that since

is still counted as our dependent, because of her disability, we can count

her meds on our income tax.

Hi Kass,

Thanks for making the point that you are writing it off as a supplement

rather than a medicine! That seems to be the key in having it count.

Here's the info from the IRS on supplements if anyone would like to see

how they explain it:

Nutritional Supplements

You cannot include in medical expenses the cost of

nutritional supplements, vitamins, herbal supplements,

inatural medicines,i etc. unless they are recommended

by a medical practitioner as treatment for a specific

medical condition diagnosed by a physician. Otherwise,

these items are taken to maintain your ordinary good

health, and are not for medical care.

Here's the link I copied that from:

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html#d0e205

Here's what the IRS says about over the counter drugs:

The law limits the deduction for medicine or drugs to

insulin and those drugs that require a prescription.

Even when recommended by a doctor, medicines available

over-the-counter are not deductible.

Here's the link I copied that from:

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=109652,00.html

We've been told for years that over the counter medicines did *not* count

on taxes, even when prescribed. Since the document I quoted in my post

was a " clarification " of an existing rule, I suspect people have

interpreted the rule two different ways in the past--including your tax

preparer and mine, apparently!--and the IRS finally recognized it needed

to explain the rule better.

BTW, does Kentucky Medicaid cover any over the counter meds? I just

found out last year that Indiana Medicaid does cover a select list of

them (don't know if this was new or if I just didn't know about it

before).

AnnMarie,

>Where can I find a list of OTC that Indiana Medicaid pays for?

Our pharmacist said they didn't know what meds were on the list--that if

we had a prescription for an over the counter med, they'd just have to

" run it through the system " and see if it got approved. Seemed kind of

crazy to me. There's got to be a list somewhere, but I don't know where.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I don't know, but 1 difference could also be that is 21,and doesn't

draw enough SSI to pay her non-covered meds without our help.

I know some rules are different for parents with disabled adult children. One

of those being that we can still count her as a dependent.

We paid for everything up until she was 18 but I don't remember what we were

allowed to count then.
