Guest guest
Hi Helen:-) We had a lot of fears having Janelle get the MMR shot but, we finally did it and she has been fine with it. However, we did wait till she was well and not sick so her immune system could respond appropriately. I thought about the risks of getting the shot vs the risk of actually contracting the measles with its possible outcomes. ( I had the measles when I was little) We thought the risk of her contracting the measles without the shot was higher than with (or side effects of the shot) since we visit so many doctors. In the end it has to be a personal decision. Good luck. Jovanovich > > Reply-To: RSS-Support > Date: Tue, 20 May 2003 20:09:37 -0000 > To: RSS-Support > Subject: vaccinations > > Hello everyone. Guest guest
Lee has a ton of information on vaccinations. I have not seen her post in awhile. If you look on the yahoogroups web page and do a search with her name you should be able to find her e-mail address. She can lead you to legitimate information that supports both sides of the argument. Guest guest
, I have worked extensively in the vaccine research field. This website is a fair, balanced and scientifically accurate perspective on the use of vaccines: http://www.chop.edu/consumer/jsp/microsite/microsite.jsp?id=75918 I hope it gives you the answers you need. If you want more specific information, you can email me directly, and I'll get you whatever you need. He sits on the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices. One of that committees functions is to advise on what vaccines to add to the schedules. While sitting on the committee and going through the process to make the determination to add or not add the Rotavirus to the childhood schedule- Offit held the patent for the vaccine was the recipient of a grant($350,000.00) to fund the development of the rotavirus vaccine from Merck. He did not excuse himself from the vote. He voted 3 times to add the vaccine to the schedule. The vaccine was added. Many children died & /or where permentanetly damaged from the vaccine. It was removed from the market. Offit is currently employed by a pharmaceutical company, I believe Glaxo Kline. He is a patent holder,a stock holder, and a grant recipient. It is up to each individual to decide if someone who benefits monetarily is capable of making decisions that will benefit the health of our children and our society. Guest guest
I'd like to clarify a few of the statements made: 1. Merck did NOT have a rotavirus vaccine on the market. It was still in clinical trials when the Rotashield vaccine, marketed by Wyeth, was removed from the market in 1999 for it's implication in intussusception. 79 cases were reported, with two deaths. Intussusception occurs in 1 in 3000 infants in the US each year. 2. Merck's rotavirus vaccine trials were halted while an investigation of Wyeth's vaccine was conducted, but were later allowed to resume. These trials are currently in Phase III. Merck has not filed a NDA for it's rotavirus vaccine yet. 3. Offit's grant from Merck was for his participation as a clinical investigator and advisor on their clinical trials. Over 100 other investigators participated in the trials, and were compensated as well. 4. Offit is only one of dozens of advisors to the CDC, and he was not solely responsible for the CDC's decisions on the vaccination schedule. More information on the CDC's actions regarding Rotashield can be found here: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/issues/rota/rotaq&a.htm More information on rotavirus, vaccines in development and the impact of a vaccine for rotavirus (especially in the developing world) can be found here: http://www.rotavirusvaccine.org/index.htm As someone who has worked extensively in vaccine research, I encourage each parent to do their homework, and fully understand the risks benefit ratio of both vaccination and natural disease.
