Hi --

Dang, miss the list for three days and have 450 messages to read!

ACK!

Regarding the " blow by blow, " it had a couple of errors and I added a

couple of things so I think I'll repost it shortly.

Thanks for asking, I'm doing just *great,* actually. Since about 6

hours after the surgery, it's been too easy for me. I am almost

(note, almost) embarassed it has gone so easily.

I think it is nearly impossible to start with the protein supplements

while you are still in the carafate stage (first month), because the

carafate ties up a solid 12 hours of the day (no eating/drinking one

hour before and two hours after, four times a day -- do the math...)

To get 55 grams of protein in, you have to take a lot of protein

powder and mix it in something. Mine works out to one full cup of

protein powder (I'm using the Pro whey protein from GNC) for 55 grams.

So you have to have more than a small amount of liquid with it to

make

something other than glue. Oh yes, you add the citracell to this

glop, too, to keep things simple. Anyway, though, with the liquid

and

a cup of protein powder, you can't possibly drink it all at once, no

way. It's an all day project. So you have to spread it out (in

between

the carafate). This also means you can't eat anything tasty otherwise

because you are taking the carafate and sucking down protein

supplement glop. Well, that stinks. It is probably the best way to

lose weight, though. I will concede that point.

I decided I would faithfully take my vitamins and medicines, but just

try to eat a little protein in food. This close to surgery, and

having been " well nourished " (ahem, but that is the medical jargon

for

it) before surgery, I'm not suffering a lot of protein deficiency

anyway. I may go with the protein supplements after the carafate is

finished (another week and a half). I have plenty of energy and feel

fine. Everything is functioning A-OK.

Shrimp is low-low calorie and high protein so I've been chewing on

some of those during the day. They stay down fine. Tofu is another

high protein/low carb conglomeration that can be mixed with anything

and will taste like whatever it is mixed with and is well tolerated.

I can also eat broiled fish with no problem.

Foodwise, I've tasted this and that a little over the past two weeks,

i.e., I had a banana, I've had two bites of mashed potatoes, the

shrimp, creamed soups, some with meat bits, vegetable soups, a small

bag of cheezits (that tasted like cardboard and cured my carbohydrate

and salt-driven snack urge), some crackers, 2% milk, and the biggie,

I

had four loaded nacho chips (hamburger, sauce, cheese, guacamole and

sour cream) from a Nachos Belle Grande from Taco Bell. Now, to me,

all that on the list seemed like *a lot,* but in reading it, this is

stuff I've tasted over a little more than a week period. Gosh,

before, I could have eaten all that in one sitting.

I am not craving anything but I do like to be grazing all the time.

This is a bad habit that I acquired after I quit smoking a few years

back (hence my huge weight). I substituted " put some food in the

mouth " for " smoke a cigarette. "

So to deal with this grazing/oral fixation, I've loaded up on

sugar-free popsicles (15 calories each. I'm looking for some with

less calories. I may be able to make them out of sugar free jello.

I'm trying that later when I get some popsicle molds). I made lots

of

dixie-cup sized cups of sugar free jello (5 calories in SIX of them).

And I drink *lots* of water. I'm drinking water just about

constantly.

Now that I realize what I'm doing and why I'm doing it (the grazing),

when I get up to go get something (on the same timing as I would have

smoked a cigarette), I am now telling myself " take a break. Breathe

deeply, sit down. Relax. You don't need a cigarette or food. " It

works sometimes. :) I'm hoping to cure the grazing habit, but at

least it is not hurting me calorie-wise with the almost no-cal jello

and low-cal popsicles.

I've urped about three times so far. Twice from eating soup with

vegetables much too fast and once from eating some " imitation crab "

that looked good, tasted pretty awful, and my stomach liked it less

than my tastebuds. It is not a food for which I will be acquiring a

taste. Throwing up is not like it used to be, either. It does not

have the vile taste and it's over with pretty fast. Unless you eat

*far* too much, there isn't much of it, either.

I'm averaging about 350-400 calories a day, with a record high of 700

calories the day I ate the bag of cheezits, and a couple of other

days

where I hit 600. And it feels like I am pigging out.

I keep track of the food intake on diet.com.

Anyway, this is pretty alright!

Kind regards,

( " the Barbie Wannabe " )

Yo, Barbie,

What's up girl friend? It is so wonderful to have you back on

line. I had finals and junk at school so I've been playing catch

up. I agree with Judi and the " gang " it has been quiet with " them "

being so busy dancing with Dr. R. and all. You just keep in posting

and giving us good info. We really have missed you.

Hi ,

This is what the handbook says, " For bet effect, take (carafate) on an

empty stomach, 30-60 minutes before OR 30-60 minutes after each meal and

at bedtime " . Not one hour before and two hours after unless I don't

understand your math.

Hi Donna!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm working on a book about WLS and

getting a lot of great replies. It's got me snowed under, but it's

a resource for people contemplating weight loss surgery.

All post-op volunteers appreciated!

:)

The product info on the Carafate says 1 hour before and 2 hours after.

But I'll take the reprieve if the doc says it's 30-60 min. and it

means I can *eat*, that's a-okay by me. :)

The product info on the Carafate says 1 hour before and 2 hours after.

But I'll take the reprieve if the doc says it's 30-60 min. and it

means I can *eat*, that's a-okay by me. :)

Kind regards,

Hey ,

Thanks for getting back with me with an answer. I am no longer working. I went on disability 5 years ago.

I am sorry to hear of your loss of 40% of your lung capacity and visual problems.

I have a few friends that attended Hillsborough. My room mate from college, Rudy attended Hillsborough. Do you know him. He lived in College Hill off 22nd and Lake.

I also know of old friends from Heights that attended Hillsborough. There was a time when Hillsborough was being renovated and Hillsborough students attended Jefferson High School for a year. Were you at Hillsborough then? The reason I ask is because I attended Jefferson during the time Hillsborough was being renovated.

And I am familiar with Decatur, Georgia. I have several friends from that area as well when I lived in Atlanta and College Park area.

What a small world.
