I posted this question a while ago, but had no replys, so I thought I

would give it a try again. We are looking at putting in a portacath

for Ronan (4yrs old). I have heard that mito kids have more

infection problems with them then other kids. What have been your

experiences. Ronan is suseptable to Resp. infections, but never gets

a septicemia. Please let me know your experiences with portacaths---

good and bad :)

Hi ,

Mamie Rose had a portacath, which helped her a lot. She only had it for 4 months, which is nothing compared to lots of other kids, so I hope you get other opinions, too! We had no problems with infections. We were absolutely meticulous about our technique when caring for her line. That is super important, as you no doubt know.

Good luck!

Maggie

Thanks for your opinions. In a way I am lucky because none of

Ronan's docs has seen too many mito cases and thus they don't have

a " preconcieved idea " about whether or not it will become infected.

Each time we make a decision it is based entirely on Ronan

situation. I know it sounds funny to be glad we don't have a " mito

specialist " but really our docs have been incredibly open minded to

my suggestions as well, and they really do look at what is best for

Ronan as an individual not just " Ronan a mito kid " .

Our appointment with the surgeon in April 27th . He knows Ronan

very well and I will pretty much listen to what he recommends. He

is not a typical surgeon, again he looks at Ronan's total health and

condition (and family) not just at what proceedure he is doing.

Thanks again,
