Guest guest
Tamara I would be careful not to let your therapists and drs assume everything is mito and cast it off. especially when you get the ones that feel that since its incurable there's no point in trying to help...we had a few of those and it made me so mad! My son Gaige is actually a stutter-er! He started after died. There are things called blocks and some kids will try to start over instead of picking up where they left off. With Giage, some weeks he is much better than others and we can't figure out why. He does NOT have mito so its not an energy issue in his case. If you notice its bad on a day that speech will be coming, ask her to grab a stuttering scale eval and bring it with her...maybe it would help her figure it out. I wouldn't ask her to do it unless it was a day he was having a hard time b/c otherwise you would be hard-pressed to get her to do it again! deb...mom to three great adopted kids... (07.04.96-05.26.03) with Mitochondrial Disease, Gaige age 5 with High Functioning Autism & dysfluency and Bliss age 2 with very very mild Cerebral Palsy.www.HeartLiftersGallery.com

Guest guest
Our does this and they say it is because she cant recall the words to complete what she wants to say. She gets very frustrated and cries because she cant remember. We have found a new Dr. here who says he can change all this so we shall see! Blessings to you and yours, Horsley Taking 6-8 tries to finish a sentence????? First of all I would love to take the time to thank everyone in this group for all of their help with my post. I sure hope no one thinks I'm stupid, I have learned soooo much with this group. My son who just turned 5 years old last month, has been having trouble finishing his sentences. Here is an example...I want... I want... I want to... I want to go outside... I want to go outside and ... I want to go outside and feed the horse. There are some days we hardly see it, yet there are days we see it very often. We have Speech, OT and PT. I have talked to them all about it and they suggested a energy issue. Which maybe we just assume it is a energy issue. We have only noticed it the last few months. It's almost like he is stuttering a sentence instead of a word. And he has had an increase in his endurance in the last 3 months. And suggestions?? Has anyone ever seen this in you kids. I just assume everything is a Mito thing, but maybe this is not.It is really hard for him, because he gets very mad at himself, because it takes him so long. Any help would be great!!!!Tamara(mommy of age 5, unspecific Mito)Please contact mito-owner with any problems or questions.

Guest guest
Does he do this more when he is frustrated? Sometimes natural stress can bring this type of studdering on, then it snowballs becaused they are frustrated when they cannot get the words out. I had this problem as a child. For me it was linked to dyslexia. My brain was moving faster than my mouth could, resulting in studdering. After a few years of retraining my brain to work with the dyslexia I did fine. My nephew also has alot of speech problems, including studdering. He is now 10. His is due to a severe cleft palate, surgically repaired. He has natural speech problems due to the cleft, but his studdering is most likely due to stress. He also studders sentences like you described with your son. He gets so frustrated by not being able to have someone underestand him that the studdering starts. He now has been fitted for this little device he wears in his ear like a hearing aide. I guess it repeats what he is saying and helps with the studdering, because he is more aware. I do not know exact details about it but it works when he wears it. Also I know it is about 4000 dollars and no insurance will cover it. Of course I do not know what your son's problem is exactly, these are just some suggestions. Hopefully they can help you some. Guest guest
My son does exactly the same thing. He has periods where this occurs for a week or so and I cannot say what precipitates it or what helps it to recede again. I have not noticed it occuring during illness only - I do think it comes on during periods of extra stress, but don't believe that is the only time it occurs. It often seems that he is bent on saying the whole sentence without there being a 'mistake'. This is just my interpretation due to his liking closure, things were they belong, so I am thinking that he likes his sentences not to be choppy, either. But perhaps it is word recall difficulty. A few years ago he was found to have low serotonin levels and his neuro tried to put him on the smallest dose of Paxil. For two weeks it was impressive - his speech improved quite a bit (his speech is often slurry, but all the words are in there). His speech was much clearer for those two weeks, then suddenly he started having problems recalling just the exact word he wanted to use. He could go all around the word, describing it, etc. but not find 'it'. After two days of this, the neuro stopped the Paxil. My MIL had the same experience with it. Anyway, I wonder about low serotonin? If this is my son's reason, it goes away on it's own. It is frustrating while this is happening, but we just try to be extra patient, give more time, often give some suggestions for words he might like to pick. He always recognizes the one he wants right off. Cara
Guest guest
Could this possibly be a stroke episode issue? Does he have any other symptoms that concern you? I had a stroke episode once many years ago where I could't for the life of me finish my sentence without repeating words. Often I would stutter and other times I would repeat the last word of the sentence several times. Recall was a big issue at this time too. Some stroke episodes affect large areas and you will see different problems and some are small and would only show up in speech or some small area of the body/mind. Asenath just had a very small stroke episode last week affecting her mouth and speech only. She couldn't say her L sounds and was very slurred and thick tongued. Hope you are able to get to the bottom of the trouble. Maybe some extra rest might even help. My speech gets rough when I am drained.
