Guest guest
From what I understand, chances of recurring maternal inheritance can be quoted as 0%-100% meaning it is completely unpredictable. Some women will have all mito kids, some will have all healthy kids, and many are precariously balancing in between. I don't expect a completely mito free child, but I hope that I can have a child with much milder syptoms. > > > > DEAR ERIN MY NAME IS SHANNON AND I ALSO HAD A LITTLE GIRL WITH > > > LEIGHS DIS.... > > > > IS YOUR CHILD STILL LIVING? Guest guest
Hi, If your child's mito is maternal, then that would mean that any future children would definitely have mito, I think. I guess what you don't know would be the degree of difficulty he or she would have. From my perspective, this is somewhat different than autosomal recessive inheritance (which is actually more common) where the chances of having a healthy child are 3 out of 4. Such a complex decision . . . . I am " older " (turning 37 in May) and have one healthy child in addition to my mito child, so I have decided not to have any more. But, it was a **very** difficulty decision as I always planned to have a large family with 3 or 4 children. Take care and good luck with your decision, Lori Re: Second pregnancy-Struggling with moral issues. > Thank you for you story. Guest guest
, First let me commend you for putting quite well into words a subject that many of us have faced but few want to talk about. It's not an easy thing to even admit that we have doubts about having other children once we know about how difficult the course of a mito disease can be. i didn't know my son was affected until after his younger sister was born (she was born with severe symptoms) and i honestly don't know how i would have reacted to a second pregnancy if i'd known then that Mitch would also have mito problems. I don't regret having my daughter for one single second. My children are my treasures and i cherish every moment we have together. but i will tell you that i made sure i would not be able to have any more children EVER after i really began to understand what we were up against. That is a decision that would not be appropriate for everyone. Some on this list are blessed by new additions to their family after one child has been diagnosed, and sometimes even after a child has gone home to heaven. I would encourage you to follow what your heart is telling you is the right thing to do, if you are pregnant. wanting a child is never selfish. Being a parent is the most self LESS job on the face of this earth! i hope you find contentment with your decision. :-) ruth mom to Mitch (nearly 9) and Lexi (6 in about 3 weeks), both mito affected and both my treasures
Guest guest
I am very glad to hear that you will keep you child. I completely understand your worries, as you know I am going through it also. Also if you are pregnant, we can share alot! I do know there is some types of mito that can be tested for while you are still pregnant. The tests can be done as early as 10 weeks. If you decided to go that route then at least you know, to be mentally prepared. For us, we decided not to take the risk of the test (1/100 shot of miscarriage, I'm high risk already). Best of luck to you. I am eager to hear your final result of the test. Also if the pressure is killing you, your doctor can run a blood test now to find out if you actually are pregnant.
