Guest guest
Hello , I have worked with farmworkers for 8 years as a medical anthropologist. University of California Department of Agricultural Medicine has formal materials. California Institute for Rural Studies in also has some information. Camp Aide and Lideres Campesinas has some materials. Nino a Nino program in Latin America has some materials. Researchers in Canada and Africa have materials in English for some of their populations. Environmental Protection Agency also has many materials. Novela program in WA state has some materials. Maybe we should talk sometime. Next week I will be in Fresno, so I will be free to talk in early August. Good luck with your effort. Guest guest
Dear : The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs has developed and been field testing a curriculum on pesticide safety education for young children this past year. It is oriented for migrant and seasonal farmworker children. We have also just received funding to develop additional curriculums for children and youth. Please contact Lori Strauss, our AmeriCorps Senior Program Manager, who is the lead contact person working on pesticide/worker safety on AFOP staff. I would be great if we could work together and avoid reinventing the wheel. There are too limited funds available and we need to maximize the resources that we do have available. Guest guest
Hi Tammy: I had an exchange with one of the members of this listserve several months ago regarding our farmworker health study. I had mentioned that we had asthma incidence and she responded, asking whether I meant prevalence (which I did). In any case, she told me that she had been to a conference where a paper had been presented on the topic of pesticide exposure and asthma, at least that is my recollection. Guest guest
Or maybe you refer to this, from Narda: The Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology section at the Oregon Health Division is doing some great work with their workers comp. data, as well as partnering with some private insurers, to get work-related injury data. The section manager is Heumann at (503) 731-4025. He is an epidemiologist with medical anthropology training and has a statistician on staff who is doing the workers comp. data analyses. As far as I know, they are doing surveillance of pesticide exposures as well as dermatitis and asthma, under several coop. agreements with NIOSH. It's a good group. I used to be the manager, and have recently retired (Sept. 1st). or this, from Adolfo Mata: contact the Yakima Valley Farmworkers Clinic in Topennish, WA. They are doing work on asthma and farmworkers--(509) 865-5898. They presented on their Asthma Environmental Health Project at the National Farmworker Health Conference in Portland.
