Guest guest
Zipporrah seems to have the high arch, but what do you mean by saggy cheeks? Zipporrah's are huge. Even on ultrasound they were so big the kids thought it was her fists by her face. She wasn't fat either. She was only 7 lbs. 3 oz. at birth. Zipporrah suck well most of the time but sometimes it is as if she forgets the proper way and sucks in an odd way that cannot get any milk. She has a hard time latching on due to gagging, and then she swallows too much air and has tons of burps and wiggles and squirms because of it. She also vomits frequently. Some days it is only once or twice and others it is several times. She does the arching of her back thing too which seems so uncomfortable looking. She straightens and then arches and she also tends to sleep this way too which her tummy out and legs and head backwards in an arch. Darla: mommy to Asenath and the gangGet more from the Web. Guest guest
Darla, I think that some infants with reflux arch their back because it lengthens the esophagus. There is a condition called Sandifer's syndrome where infants and children actually tilt their head sideways to lengthen the esophagus and when the reflux is treated and/or surgically corrected the neck posture normalizes. The little girl next door was diagnosed with this as an infant. She has CP also. http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic2039.htm Eur J Pediatr Surg. 1995 Aug;5(4):203-5. Department of Pediatric Surgery, Hospital Materno-Infantil, San Sebastian, Spain. Eight children presenting with the Sandifer syndrome (with neck contorsion, radiologic studies of the cervical spine and normal neurologic exploration) have been studied in relation to gastro-esophageal reflux (GER). In the eight cases barium swallow, 24 h pH-metering, manometry, endoscopy and biopsy were made, presenting pathological GER. The barium swallow was pathologic in 62% of them. The pH-metering in 37%. The lower esophageal sphincter pressures were decreased in 37%, with esophageal motility alteration in 75%. Signs of macro and/or microscopic esophagitis were found in 62%. Three patients received surgical treatment and the rest medical treatment, with improvement of the neck contorsion in all cases. We have attempted to evaluate which one of the functional explorations for the GER diagnosis is better in this kind of patients, and we have demonstrated that the most frequently found alteration is the esophageal dysmotility. Guest guest
Abbey's cheeks are big, too, even down toward her mouth which makes them look a little droopy - her tone is much better now so it isn't as bad anymore. As for the arching, we used Zantac for the first 2 yrs. and it worked great. She stopped vomitting as much and stopped arching. She doesn't have as many issues with her stomach anymore but every now and then she goes trough a spell. > Zipporrah seems to have the high arch, but what do you mean by saggy cheeks?
