Guest guest
I buy a bag of gel caps at the health food store and transfer the enzymes because my boys prefer to swallow capsules. I also get one size larger, and start by emptying the powder from the large part of the veggie capsule into the large part of the gel cap. When the gel cap gets full, I invert the smaller veggie cap and pack down the enzymes, then keep filling it. Then I empty the smaller top of the veggie cap on top of the now really full gel cap and let it sit on top. Then add the top of the gel cap on top and click shut. After you get the hang of it, the process goes pretty quickly. I only use the gel caps about 1/3 of the time now because I got better at planning to give the enzymes 30 minutes ahead of time. For most all other supplements, it really doesn't matter whether or not it comes in a gel or veggie capsule because the dissolving time and release of the contents is not that critical. All the test I ran put them both within about 25 minutes of each other. However, because enzymes work on CONTACT with the food and the idea is to get as much food broken down before it leaves the stomach (45-90 minute window), you want to maximize the time the two are in contact together in the stomach. This whole capsule thing came up when a few parents weren't seeing consistent results in the beginning - not consistently positve and not consistently negative. Changing the timing resulted in improved consistent results. So although this isn't based on lab test tube tests or double-blind clinical studies, it proved to be very helpful in real life with everyday people eating everyday food. The reason there is a general move toward veggie capsules for ALL supplements is because of the mad cow issue and/or using animal substances at all. For the person considering putting one capsule in another, I don't think this will really work best. I found that the veggie capsule tends to continuously re-fold back on itself and reseal as parts of the capsule dissolves. I would see a " hole " puncture in the veggie capsule starting as soon as 8 minutes after ingesting, and a little enzymes would escape into solution, and some liquid would go into the capsule...but then the capsule would reseal keeping the rest of the enzymes inside and the rest of the liquid out. Then another bit of capsule would dissolve away... some enzymes escape and then the capsule would reseal. This would go on with most of the enzymes staying inside until about 20-25 minutes later until the entire capsule would dissinegrate. The gel capsules uniformly dissintegrated within 3 minutes - almost vanishing completely in solution all at once. .
Guest guest
: Thank you for the information on gel caps. I was looking for a shortcut in the hopes of dh being more supportive...the easier this is for him, the easier he perceives it to be on our son and the more cooperative he is. Thanks again...you have been so extraordinarily helpful! BTW, I have more questions but will post separately.
