Hi,

I'm just curious if it's the b/c muscles in all the body are affected, why don't we see more GI motility issues in the other myopathies? I may be very wrong, but I can't find as much mention of GI motility issues in other types of muscle disorders on the MDA site. I don't know, I'm just puzzled by all this.

AnneR,

Smooth muscle is responsible for the contractility of hollow organs,

such as blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, the bladder, or the

uterus. Smooth muscle is primarily under the control of autonomic

nervous system, while skeletal muscle is under the controlled by the

somatic nervous system. Maybe mito patients have more problems with

their autonomic nervous systems. Perhaps bowel and bladder problems

could be related to poor autonomic nervous system control. Evan has

constipation and is also a horrible stick when it comes to blood

draws--I guess that fits.
