Guest guest
Hi Rose, My son works for a mosquito control company because the mosquitos are so thick up here. They spray (with all natural ingrediants nothing chemical) because of West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. We have had deaths here from the diseases. Do they spray in your areas and do you have serious problems with mosquitos in your part of the country? Just wondering..... Guest guest
Rose, Please do not mention PETA. I love animals, insects, etc. but would not join that group for anything. Case in point: our local SPCA is in the lower income area of our city. Since they are there, they do not get a lot of donations so they do the best to take care of the animals they have. Well, PETA found out that had some sick animals so they took them to court. Instead of helping them by providing Vet care or money to take care of them, they forced them to spend part of their budget in court. What a wonderful organization. I wonder how many animals had to be put down because they could not longer afford to take care of then since the budget was spend on court costs. We save newspapers for them and take dog food when we can. We even adopted our dogs from there 6 years ago. We did not mind spending the extra money to make them well. OK, I am off my PETA soapbox. I appreciate what they are trying to do but I don't like the way they go about it. Guest guest
Debbie, they don't spray every year. There is a lot of publicity about not having standing water, etc. If it's a bad year for skeeters, they'll spray. I keep those wipe-on towelettes handy for the kids & my mom. I rarely get bitten, for some reason. My mom has a terrible reaction to them; just started this in the last few years. The first time we were cleaning up some stuff in the garage & the mosquitoes were pretty thick, so I said let's go in & finish this later. She didn't mention being bitten badly. In the house she had 2 or 3 bites on her face that were vary large & red. I gave her Benadryl, but within a couple of hours she looked like someone had punched her. One bite under her eye caused a bruise all across her cheek & around the eye; it took over a week to fade. She's had it happen a couple of times since. Now if we see any mosquitoes in the house, she wipes her face with the towelettes (they contain DEET, so use caution with young kids) & she hasn't had a bad reaction for at least a year. I've never seen anything like it. I got stung repeatedly years ago trying to pick blackberries (I was so greedy; just kept picking with my head in a cloud of mosquitoes!). My forehead swelled up & itched a lot, but my aunt made a paste of baking soda to put on it & it was back to normal the next day. At least we haven't had any West Nile around here; I think they've had a few cases in Indiana, but not near here. I hate to see the pesticides used, but the alternatives are too great either. Guest guest
Rose, I had to chime in about the skeeters. I don't like to use a lot of chemicals so I got the Burt's Bees Lemongrass Lotion. It is more natural and the bugs don't like it. I used to have a salve for bug bites made by Burt's Bees but can't find it in the stores; will have to check the website. I also like the gerbil stories. I was never good with the rodents. For some reason they always bit me. My sister got strep throat one time and our hamster died. Think it was the strep. Little guy went belly up one morning. Keep up with the stories, I really like them. Terri G. PS I really do miss my crabs but I might turn the habitat into a terrarium.
