You can start another type of medication (immunosupressant) before you're totally off the pred. Methotrexate, Imuran, Plaquenil--are all good choices. Since they all take several months to really kick in--it's good to get one going before you're off the pred, so that the sarc can't get a better hold and then you have to fight addl systems being involved, or worsening of the problems already there. As far as the depression--that to is normal when coming down off pred. Steroids inflate your emotions, some people get a "high" (was never my experience, but the MD's say it's so. .) and then when you're coming down off it-- your whole body has to adjust all the hormone levels and adrenal levels.
