Guest guest
Tony, It is great to have you join us. I live in Portsmouth so it is great to have someone in the area join the group. I have been going back and forth between the MS or NS diagnosis for some time, so I was wondering who your doctors are? If I ever get a diagnosis, I would like to have someone who has dealt with NS before. I see from your post that you are worried about working. What type of work do you do? Do you have a private disability policy through work? If you are worried this might happen talk to your HR benefits person. They can tell you about taking a short term disablity leave - mine was paid for three months. I ended up never going back but I did have a private long term disability that pays me 60% of my salary, so I am the lucky to still have an income. Well, take care and let me know if you have both MS and NS. I can give you some resources for MS; they treated me for 6 months and I did get involved in some groups. Terri G. Guest guest
Thank you for the response Teri, I really appreciate it. It is funny on the first tried I was awarded disability by SDDI, which was a shock and a surprise to me and my doctor. It has been my company that is really dragging their feet and not committing to providing me LTD. My STD will run out in April. I am in a very weird position. I have worked for my company 29 years now; they have a rule what is called the rule of 75. That allows me get retirement benefits from them. The way the rule of 75 works when an employees age added to the number of years of employment exceed the number 75, then you are eligible to receive retirement benefits even if you are not at the age of 55 or above. However, if I retire before I am granted LTD, then I will loose my LTD benefits. If I don't retire, then I can not receive any of my benefits, such as medical insurance and stock benefits. They have me caugth between a rock and a hard spot. They are no help and I am about to loose some major income is less then 45 days if they do not come through. They don't return my phone calls or emails, they just ignore me. The SDDI pay check I am receiving will not cut the mustard and in about six months I will loose everything if my LTD does not kick in. I am in the process of attempting to sell my house, but if it does not sell it will eventually get taken away from me. I appreciate you giving me some guidence and support on this matter, once I find out what the outcome is, then I will get a lawyer if the out come is not favorable. I wish that my company was as supportive as yours was. After all my company contributes ~ $2.00 per pay check for every US employee. There is roughly 50,000 employees in the US, that would equate to ~$100,000 every month or $1,200,000 every year, so after 10 years their is a potential of building a fund of around $10,000,000 to draw from. The company I work for generates ~ $40,000,000,000 of revenue every year and their yearly profits average from $6,000,000,000 to $9,000,000,000. My disability income is like a gnat on their back and they would not even notice it. In fact it is probabaly costing them more to do all of this investigative to determine whether they should qualify me, then it would to just pay me the benefits. I worked 29 years for them and generally work 50 to 60 hours per week. Most of these years as an exempt employee and never received a dime of overtime. I really feel abused right now and violated, for 29 years I received stellar reviews and was a top performer, unfortunately that doesn't appear to be counting for anything right now. I feel like all of my hard work and dedication was for nothing. The bottom line is that I am angry, frustrated, confused, and empty. It is a very scary thought to think that they can and will abandond me and throw me out with the bath water. Thanks for listening to me.... I was very fortunate the the company I worked for helped my get my short and long term disability going. My STD (short term disability not sexually transmitted disease) lasted three months, then I had to wait 3 more months (for a total of 6) and then I was eligible. I made sure I got all of my documentation to them and they were there to take care of me. I don't think it would be different if my first diagnosis was not MS but NS because they based their decision on symptomology not on the diagnosis. Have you ever had a neuropsych testing? That is what did it for me. I had lost my ability to multitask which made me unable to do my job. I am trying to get SSD - I am working through an attorney, but with a possible diagnosis of NS, I am not sure I will get it without a firm diagnosis. Have you thought about contacting the EEOC - can your company give you that kind of trouble without it being discriminatory because of your diagnosis? Also, for the SSD get an attorney - they will be able to work the maze of paperwork. You don't need the stress. The second part is for . Please, please bring this up to your doctor immediately or go to the ER. It is so frightening to read about these things and I am very worried about you. Please let us know how you do. And third, Hello Claire. Glad to have you join us. Tell us about yourself (if you want) so we can get to know you. Lastly, fourth, Rose my geriatric crab, Dr. Claw, died yesterday. I gave him a nice burial at sea, a great prayer and wished him God Speed to the great crabbie pattie in the sky. I guess Nurse Betty is going to have to have a new pal added to the homestead this week. I don't want her to be lonely. I hope everyone takes care of themselves. I feel lucky to be in some kind of remission and I hope others will have the fortune to do so also. Terri G.
