Guest guest
Darla, I don't have any advice to offer, just my prayers for your entire family. Have a safe trip tomorrow. Are you taking Asenath with you? Maybe Dr. Whiteman would have some advice/ideas for you. Hang in there and keep your chin up. You are a great mommy and the Lord will see you through. God Bless, Kim - Mom to and Lindsey (2) Partial Complex I Asenath-High blood sugar/etc. Does anyone have any experience with diabetes or elevated blood sugars? Asenath's have been high for several months now due to the steroid use. Her fasting blood sugar level was 145 last Wednesday and today it is 157. It has been up to the 180's and unless she seems to be getting hypoglycemic with her symptoms stays above the 120's. The neurologists told me to keep aware of her numbers because steroids can cause you to become diabetic if you are prone towards it. Well, I have talked to the doctors about her regularly high numbers and they keep saying as long as they aren't continually high don't worry about it. The thing is, they aren't listening to me because they ARE continually high even when fasting overnight which we tried last week and got the 145 number. Any suggestions of what I should do? Asenath has also been having more headaches, holding her head and compla! ining lots, her pulse ox has been running low, her eyes have been very heavy looking, and she is constantly clingy, even holding my hand to fall asleep each night. I can tell she is wiped out even though she is getting plenty of rest, so I guess we are hitting one of her bad periods again. Please say a prayer for her as I know she is struggling and we also are getting a nasty virus running through the house and I am worried she will get it and of course worried about possible strokes happening. I am hoping the headaches aren't a sign that the steroids aren't working. Darla: mommy to Asenath and the gang Please contact mito-owner with any problems or questions. Guest guest
Darla, Which doctors have you talked to, the team at Mayo? Can you get the neuro to define, what would she consider " continually high " in terms of time and specific numbers. And then I would also have Asenaths numbers written down for them. Seems silly but too many time when I would tell one of Lily's doc something they say, " oh it's fine- watch for this " and it wasn't until they saw numbers on a piece of paper that it " clicked " for them. I'm sorry she is not feeling well and can imagine the feelings you must be experiencing. The waiting, wondering and worrying...........I will keep you all in my thoughts. ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Guest guest
Darla, Any time Caden is on Prednisone his bs runs high too. Anything over 180 makes you want to pee a lot. Is she ever going to be taken off of the steriods at some time? I think temporarily, her bs running no higher than 180 is not going to hurt her as lots of normal people can go as high as 180 AFTER eating but they DO NOT HAVE FASTING BLOOD SUGARS OVER 110. Anything over 110 is diabetic BUT, you have to consider her prednisone. If taken off, would she go back to her normal numbers? I'd just keep an eye on them. My daughter (11 yrs is diabetic since age 3). Also, Caden has had many bouts of both high and low blood sugars. High as 496 and 26 and he's not diabetic. But I DO know that kids with mitochondrial disease can get diabetes as the pancreas is just another organ to become invovled. That would be tragic in our case, as Caden has a Fatty Oxidation Disorder. Can you imagine diabetes and FOD.. We are supposed to ensure TONs of carbs and give him IV Dextrose when sick Add diabetes on top of that and who knows what you'd have! ehh I'd hate to think.. High blood sugars give you headaches, and make you very cranky and sometimes sleepy. If normally, she tends to run lower bs, when not on the prednisone, then she is probably very sensitive to her blood sugar staying elevated. Before we had good control on 's blood sugar, any time she'd hit 100 (which is normal) she'd act hypoglycemic! Now that we have great control, she can drop as low as 30 and be just fine (for a while!)... She'll just be semi dizzy or hungry, etc.. mild symptoms. Your body adjusts to the blood sugar level. So, I'd say you are correct in saying that she acts low when she drops down to 120. Her body will have to readjust to being in the "normal" range. Have you checked her 30 min after a meal or even every hour for 2 to 3 hours, just to see how high she might going? She doesn't need to be getting over 200. I know insulin would be a very tricky thing give the fact that she's already prone to low blood sugar. Let me know if I can help any more or how her bs is after meals, Krystena s Message ----- From: Darla Klein To: List Mito Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2004 12:27 PM Subject: Asenath-High blood sugar/etc. Does anyone have any experience with diabetes or elevated blood sugars?
